Our Story
The non-profit has its roots in what was formerly known as “The Superbowl Club.” A few members of the group would gather together after work at their favorite tavern, Shorty’s, for a beer. It was at these gatherings that the group suggested a partnership with the manager of the tavern to throw a Christmas party for the community. Various members of the community were asked to donate to the party. The group raised enough money to have an open bar and food for the patrons. In addition, there was enough money left over for the group of men to throw a New Years party.
After seeing how well the group worked together, two individuals, Seth Thomas and Michael Lawson suggested that the group form an official club to keep the effort moving forward. This was the idea that lead to the formation of “Black Men United,” a social civic non-profit organization. The goal of the organization has to host events to raise money in order to give back to the community. At its peak Black Men United boasted 35 members and acted as a gathering place for the community that provided relief and resource for community members. Its presence in the northeastern section of Centralia was profound. At its pinnacle the club’s presence attracted state senators and representatives to their community events.
Due to backlash of the club name, the organization changed its title to The United Men’s Clubhouse. For close to 7 years The United Men’s Clubhouse was inactive in the community.
In 2019, the club made its presence known again in the community. “Fish Fry Saturday’s” began in the summer of 2019 hosted by a mother and daughter duo (Marla Webster and Malaya Downey). A minimum of 10% of our profit each week was donated to various individuals/ organizations working to create a positive change in Centralia.
