NALC is urging all branches to participate in our Shut Down Hunger Food Drive by
making monetary or food donations to a local food bank. All monetary donations from
a branch treasury will be matched by NALC Headquarters.
WHAT’S THE LATEST?
• The recent government shutdown put nearly 45 million Americans at immediate
risk of losing food aid.
• The government has reopened, but the impact of the shutdown continues to be felt as uncertainty remains around aid programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
• There are 47 million Americans, including 7.2 million children, who live in households with food insecurity.
• Approximately 1.2 million veterans live in households that participate in SNAP.
• Food banks need our help to meet these needs.
WHY ARE LETTER CARRIERS STEPPING UP?
• Letter carriers deliver to every neighborhood in every community nationwide.
• We see when people are struggling, and we’re in a unique position to step up.
• We have deep, longstanding relationships with local food banks since we hold the largest one-day food drive, the Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, every May.
• We’re veterans (30 percent of letter carriers served in the military), and we know
more than a million of our fellow veterans around the country struggle with food
insecurity.
HOW DO I GET NALC HEADQUARTERS TO MATCH MY BRANCH’S DONATION?
• Mail a copy of any monetary donations made to a local food bank(s) from a branch
treasury to NALC Headquarters by Jan. 31, 2026. Please mail to:
NALC Headquarters
ATTN: Nicole Rhine

*Please note that monetary donation matching is specific to this Shut Down Hunger
effort only and does not apply to the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
SHOULD I REACH OUT TO OTHER GROUPS?
• Yes! Branches are encouraged to reach out to their Central Labor Councils, AFL-CIO
State Federation, and other local unions to participate.
WHAT SHOULD I NOT DO?
• DO NOT solicit monetary donations from customers while on the clock and/or in
uniform.
• DO NOT encourage customers to leave food by their mailbox.
• DO NOT collect donations (food or monetary) from customers while on the clock and/or in uniform.
• DO NOT place advertisements/flyers in customer mailboxes without postage and cancellation.
The use of G10 labels is not authorized for this initiative.
IS THIS AFFILIATED WITH THE STAMP OUT HUNGER FOOD DRIVE?
• No. While this initiative is distinctly separate from the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, the goal is the same: to provide food for our communities.
WHERE DO I SUBMIT MY BRANCH’S RESULTS?
• Submit the total amount of food and/or money donated to your national business
agent’s office by Jan. 31, 2026.
