Yesterday was a highly active stretch for our volunteers at Caughdenoy VFD. 5 times in a single day with an average of 5 members for each call:

1:18 AM – Deck Fire
Late Morning – Gas Odor Investigation
Late Afternoon – Staged for a Water Rescue
Evening – EMS Call immediately followed with a Motor Vehicle Accident

Incidents like these require teamwork, diverse skills, and people willing to step up when neighbors face their worst days. We need more hands on the line. You do not need prior experience. We provide all the training and gear for free. Whether you want to fight fires, assist with medical calls, or help with scene support, there is a place for you here. Answer the call.

Join Caughdenoy VFD today. Stop by the station any Thursday night at 7:00 PM to meet the crew and grab an application, or email us at [email protected] for more information!

🚒 "Why did it take so long for the fire department to get there?"

It's a question heard by many volunteers after a major emergency.

The answer may surprise you.

For many departments across our area, the firefighters responding to your emergency aren't sitting in the station waiting for the alarm. They're at work. They're eating dinner with their families. They're coaching Little League, shopping for groceries, sleeping, or attending their child's school event.

When the pager goes off, they stop whatever they're doing, drive to the station, put on their gear, get the apparatus out the door, and then respond to your emergency.

They're not paid to leave work.
They're not paid to miss family dinners.
They're not paid to wake up at 2:00 in the morning.

They do it because they believe that when someone in their community calls for help, someone should answer.

The reality is that volunteer fire departments across New York State and other parts of the U.S. are facing one of the greatest challenges in their history. Membership is declining while emergency calls continue to increase. Many departments are responding with fewer volunteers than ever before.

So the next time you see a fire truck heading down the road, remember that the people inside likely left behind their own lives to help someone else's.

If you've ever thought about volunteering, now is the time. You don't have to fight fires. Departments need firefighters, EMTs, Fire Police, administrative volunteers, fundraisers, drivers, and people with all kinds of skills.

Your local volunteer fire department doesn't just need donations.

It needs people to help continue on the the volunteer tradition of neighbors helping neighbors.

❤️ If a volunteer firefighter, EMT, Fire Police officer, or first responder has ever made a difference in your life, take a moment to thank them in the comments and tell us where they're from. They deserve to know their community appreciates them.

Today, as we celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary, we proudly reflect on the freedoms that define our nation and the countless men and women whose courage and sacrifice have made those freedoms possible.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the brave members of our United States Armed Forces who continue to stand watch around the globe, protecting the liberties we often take for granted. To our military veterans, thank you for your unwavering dedication, selfless service, and the sacrifices you made in defense of our great nation. Your legacy continues to inspire generations of Americans.

Here at the Caughdenoy Volunteer Fire Department Inc., we are equally proud to recognize our own dedicated members who answer the call—day or night—to protect the lives and property of our neighbors. Their commitment to serving our community embodies the same spirit of duty, honor, and sacrifice that has strengthened America for 250 years.

We also offer our sincere appreciation to every first responder across this great nation—firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, emergency dispatchers, and all those who stand ready to serve in times of need. Your courage, professionalism, and compassion make our communities stronger and safer every day.

As Americans, we are grateful for the blessings of freedom, the promise of opportunity, and the privilege of serving something greater than ourselves.

From all of us at the Caughdenoy Volunteer Fire Department Inc., we wish everyone a safe, joyful, and meaningful celebration of 250 years of American independence.

God Bless our First Responders. God Bless our Military. God Bless our Veterans. And God Bless the United States of America. 🇺🇸

Friendly reminder to be safe this holiday weekend and give us a call ONLY if it's a true emergency!

07/03/2026

Oswego County has so many spectacular fireworks 🎆🎇 shows over this Independence Day weekend: Please venture out and enjoy them rather than taking a chance with your safety by setting them off yourself. In New York State, only specific "sparkling devices" are legal statewide, while ALL aerial, exploding, and projectile fireworks remain 🚫ILLEGAL. That means absolutely no whistlin' bungholes, no spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, ho**ey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, and not one single whistlin' kitty chaser 🤣🥲

Hope to see you Monday, with all 10 fingers still attached! 🙌
