As 12-year-old Xavier Taylor remains unresponsive in the ICU after suffering a catastrophic injury during baseball warmups, his father is making sure another child caught in the tragedy knows he is not to blame.
Xavier, a young player from Maple Shade, New Jersey, collapsed and went into cardiac arrest after being struck in the neck by a baseball while walking toward the dugout. He was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital, where he has remained on a ventilator as his family continues praying for a miracle.
But while thousands across the country have rallied around Xavier, his father, Greg Taylor, has spoken publicly about another 12-year-old at the center of the story - the teammate whose throw unintentionally led to the accident. Greg, a retired firefighter who rushed to his son's side that day, has repeatedly called the incident a tragic freak accident and has made it clear that he does not blame the young boy.
Support for Xavier has spread far beyond New Jersey. Families have placed baseball bats outside their homes, teams have worn his number 6, and hundreds gathered outside Cooper University Hospital to pray and show support. Through it all, Greg's message has remained one of hope and compassion.
"My son Xavier loves this game. He will play this game again," he said.
As Xavier's loved ones continue their vigil at his bedside, supporters around the country are praying not only for his recovery, but also for healing and peace for everyone affected by a moment no one could have predicted and no child should ever have to carry.
