This week during , we’re honoring Elbert Frank Cox (1895-1969). Cox received his Bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Indiana University in 1917. After spending a few years in the U.S. Army and teaching math in public schools and at Shaw University, he went on to receive his Ph.D. from Cornell in 1925. He spent four years teaching at West Virginia State College before spending the rest of his career at Howard University, serving as chairman of the Mathematics Department. Cox is credited as a key figure in preparing the Howard Mathematics Department to establish a Ph.D. program in 1975.
