Rogue River Watershed Council

Rogue River Watershed Council We enhance resilience in Rogue River watersheds, benefiting natural and human communities alike.

Southern Oregon faces challenges that require innovative solutions. Habitat loss, invasive species, stream-side development, and other factors put watershed health at risk. We strive to engage people of all ages and backgrounds while working with organizations and landowners to conserve and improve streams and the land that surrounds them. Our work is vital to the community, land, and wildlife in our region because we all depend on water.

Our newest story features a fantastic student film by Parker Burrill. In his words:

"This film is my attempt to shed light on the importance of this ecological function and is a call for anyone who doesn't understand fire to engage with and understand its role, power, and importance. Incorporating fire and instilling community based engagement is our path forward to healthier environments and safer communities."

Check out this Northern Checkerspot we found by our culvert removal project! Most Northern Checkerspots have rows of orange-yellow on a network of black grid-like veins. The wings are highly patterned and bright. You’ll most likely find them hovering near plants in the Aster family, such as Rabbitbrush, Fleabane, or Goldenrod, which serve as the primary "nursery" for their dark, spiny caterpillars.

Sometimes we have to de-water a portion of a creek to replace a culvert or dam. When this happens, we do a "fish salvage" where local biologists and staff go out to move every last fish out of the section that's being drained and into the unaffected downstream end. Today we carefully transported over 300 coho fry, sculpin, and pacific giant salamanders. It's a fun day of fieldwork and important to keeping the fish populations intact for the newly restored stream!

Check out this basking garter snake! These ectotherms rely on the sun to regulate their body temperature. Instead of generating their own internal heat, they must soak up heat from their surroundings.

We spotted this one out near our project site on West Fork Trail Creek!
