Rotary Club of Pawtucket

On October 30, 1919 seven prominent businessmen met at the To Kalon Club to form a branch of Rotary International. Robert Moeller, President of Collyer Wire, was named temporary chairman and Elmer Hubbard, secretary. After meeting with three members of the Providence Rotary Club in November, the group voted to establish a permanent Rotary Club.

The Rotary Club of Pawtucket officially formed on December 4, 1919 at a meeting at which Rotary District Governor Charles W. Lovett of Lynn, Massachusetts spoke. The official charter #568 was issued by Rotary International on January 1, 1920.

Since its organization as a service club, Pawtucket Rotary has made donations of time and money to many worthwhile causes. The Club raised funds for needy children at Christmas, paid for others to attend summer camp, supported international service, created the Shakespearian Garden in Slater Park , and supported many local organizations. The Club has helped numerous nonprofts with donations and other in-kind support, including the Salvation Army, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, Pawtucket Public Library, Memorial Hospital, among others. In 1969, Pawtucket Rotary donated Hodgson-Rotary Park, which is located next to the Slater Mill, to honor Pawtucket Rotary member Percy Hodgson who was elected Rotary International President in 1949-1950.

The club continues its philanthropy. In 2013 the club donated $10,000 to the Slater Mill to erect a blacksmith shop exhibit. In 1987 the club swore in its first female member, Mary Coyle, and since has welcomed both men and women for membership. Pawtucket Rotary’s territory encompasses Pawtucket and Central Falls.
