Cherry Scout Reservation (HHCSR) began in 1930 when the Council's lease expired on Camp Mishawaka at Stone City, Iowa. Cherry contributed $1,000 for the purchase of eighteen acres of land along the Wapsipinicon River one mile North of the town of Waubeek, Iowa. Camp Waubeek opened in 1931 due to the efforts of the Cedar Rapids American Legion's Hanford Post # 5. Due to continuing growth in Council

membership, attendance at camp and in line with camp development needs, Howard H. Cherry donated $14,000 in 1957 for the purchase of an additional 125 acres. Cherry enabled the Council to purchase an adjoining 265 acres and open a second camp called Wakonda. It was to become a patrol cooking camp. Today, Camp Waubeek and Camp Wakonda operate side-by-side to serve the needs of Scouting and the greater community.

During the Order of the Arrow Fall Conclave this last weekend. Scouts from the Hawkeye Area Council volunteered for the Council's Conservation Service for 9/11 Day, supported by 9/11 Day and AmeriCorps. Scouts and adult volunteers removed invasive species, planted trees, and mulched and tubed newly planted trees to get them off to a good start. Another Conservation Service for 9/11 Day opportunity is coming on September 12.

The Hawkeye Area Council is excited to announce that we received a grant from 9/11 Day and AmeriCorps to support service opportunities at Camp Wakonda!

The 9-11 Day Foundation organizes the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. In recognition of the 25th anniversary of 9-11, please join us during this OA Conclave weekend (Aug. 29) to provide service to camp and to Do A Good Turn Daily.

We have one facility that got damaged. Adirondack A set had a tree come down on one of the three structures. It is damaged beyond repair. We will have it all cleaned up within a couple weeks. If you already have a reservation or are wanting to reserve Adri A, please be advised that there will only be two structures at that location. Update to the storm on 8-7-2026. We started the clean up process on Saturday by getting the service road passable and removing the down trees at the front gate area. Huge THANK YOU to the crew that worked on that. We still have a large amount of work to do. We are looking for all skill level of help. All the areas have some amount of leaf litter, small and large limbs to be picked up. This type of work can be done by anyone. We also have several location that have trees that need cleared from the areas. All trails have some amount of debris on them and most are closed due to trees blocking the trail.
If you or your unit wants to lend a hand that would be great. The heavy timber work(chainsaw work, machinery operations) will most likely happen on Saturdays, unless we have a large crew during the week. We have at minimum 50 locations that need work. After doing an assessment we are seeking assistance for tomorrow to help with storm damage cleanup. We have a lot of trees that are down in areas along with a lot of leaf litter and smaller limbs. So any and all sawyers that are available and anyone else that would like to come up to Camp to assist with cleanup, please meet at the Ranger Shop at 8:00 a.m. . We will provide a lunch for all those that come up to help.

Over the last hour HHCSR had a very large storm come through the area. Campers and volunteers are all safe as they road out the storm in a one of the storm shelters. We are assessing any damage at this time. If we need assistance we will post about what we are in need of.
