With the recent disaster that hit our community, Gov Beshear's declaration of a state of emergency reactivated our committee. We are currently awaiting assessment of long term needs not met through insurance, FEMA, Red Cross, Small Business Administration and other disaster recovery programs.
Our mission statement is as follows:
1. To provide coordinated management of the long-term recovery to a disaster including spiritual, emotional and physical resources to those affected regardless of race, creed, color, gender, disability or religious preference.

2. To provide additional long term care assistance to individuals affected by the disaster who do not have adequate personal resources for basic needs and whose needs are not met by relief systems such as FEMA, Red Cross, Small Business Administration and other disaster recovery programs.

3. To advocate for ongoing preparedness within the community and cooperation with governmental and voluntary agencies active in disaster.

Our community continues to heal after the devastation caused by the December 2021 tornado. We have seen how our county has pulled together to help one another as work continues. Our committee is thankful for the coordination with Mayor Allen Miller of Bremen and his insight into his community’s needs. Case workers continue to open new cases and have now been able to fund and close out over 50 of them. When disasters leave families with complete losses, funds could easily be depleted on just a handful of cases. In effort to assist as many as possible, our case workers have helped families apply for various sources of funds that may be available to them. As surrounding counties who were hit by the tornadoes are still working to establish long term disaster committees, we are thankful our county was organized and able respond as quickly as we did. We are appreciative of all the support we have received- supplies, volunteers, and funds. It has now been over 5 months since the tornado and while significant progress has been made, there is much left to be done!

Thanks to the volunteer spirit and generosity of hundreds of people following the December 10' tornadoes that impacted Muhlenberg County, the recovery process continues to move forward. Over 90 applicants have now met with case managers to develop a plan to deal with the needs that remain after meeting with FEMA, Red Cross, and insurance representatives. The role of Muhlenberg County Long Term Disaster Recovery Committee is to address those long-term unmet needs, and although significant progress has been made to this point, there is much, much more to be done over the coming weeks and months.

The cooperative efforts of local citizens as well as scores of folks outside Muhlenberg County have gotten us this far. That same mindset will assure that the recovery process will continue. So, on behalf of Muhlenberg County Long Term Disaster Recovery Committee, thanks for the support that makes providing help to those affected possible.
