October is International AAC Awareness Month! 🗣️💬✨

Did you know that communication goes far beyond spoken words? Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to all the ways people communicate when speech isn't an option or isn't enough on its own.

Here’s what you should know about AAC:

💡 What is AAC?
AAC includes non-tech tools like gestures, sign language, and picture boards, as well as high-tech speech-generating devices and communication apps on tablets.

💡 Who uses AAC?
People of all ages! Individuals with autism, cerebral palsy, ALS, stroke survivors, traumatic brain injury survivors, or anyone who needs extra support making their voice heard.

💡 AAC supports language, it doesn't replace it!
Research shows that using AAC does not hinder speech development—it actually supports and encourages natural speech and language learning while reducing communication frustration.

💡 How can you be an inclusive communicator?
* Give extra time: Wait patiently for the user to compose their thoughts.
* Speak directly to the person: Talk to the user, not just their caregiver or assistant.
* Assume competence: Believe that the communicator understands and has something valuable to say.
* Respect their device: A communication device is an extension of a person's body—never touch or take it away without permission.
Everyone deserves a voice and the tools to share it. Join us this month in spreading awareness, breaking down communication barriers, and building a more inclusive community for all! 💙
