🚴‍♂️ As kids head back to school, make sure they stay safe on two wheels. Always wear a properly fitted helmet—it’s the simplest way to prevent serious head injuries. Dress in bright, snug-fitting clothes to stay visible and avoid anything that could get caught in the bike. Before every ride, check that the brakes work, the tires are full, and reflectors are clean. Kids should ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, and use proper hand signals when turning or stopping. Make sure their bike has lights or reflectors, especially during early morning or late afternoon rides. No phones, no headphones—distractions can be deadly. Teach them to ride at least three feet from parked cars to avoid doors opening suddenly. When crossing busy streets, it’s safest to get off the bike and walk it across. And before school starts, take a few practice rides together to reinforce good habits. Safety doesn’t just happen—it’s taught, practiced, and expected. Let’s keep our kids riding smart and getting to school safely.
🚴‍♂️ Back-to-School Bicycle Safety Tips 🚴‍♀️
Make Sure Your Kids Ride Smart and Stay Safe
Helmet On, Always.
No exceptions. A properly fitted helmet cuts the risk of head injury by over 80%.
Bright & Tight.
Wear bright colors and snug clothes—no loose straps or shoelaces that could catch.
Check the Bike.
Brakes work? Tires full? Reflectors clean? Give the bike a once-over before every ride.
Ride on the Right.
Ride with traffic, not against it. Use hand signals to turn or stop.
Be Seen. Be Heard.
Use lights and reflectors, especially early morning or late afternoon. A bell or horn is a plus.
No Phones or Headphones.
Distractions get kids hurt. Eyes up, ears open, hands on the handlebars.
Watch for Doors.
Teach kids to ride at least 3 feet from parked cars to avoid getting “doored.”
Cross Safely.
Get off the bike and walk it across busy streets or crosswalks.
Know the Route.
Stick to safe streets with less traffic and slower speeds. Avoid shortcuts through driveways or alleys.
Practice Makes Safe.
Ride the route with your kids a few times before school starts. Rehearse safe habits.
