🚗👶 Investing in Child Safety All Week Long 👶🚗

This week, Safe Kids Houston County's host agency, the Centerville Fire Department, is proud to host a National Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) Certification Course.

Firefighters and Police Officers from Centerville Fire Department, Houston County Fire Department, City of Perry Fire & Emergency Services, Warner Robins Fire Department, and Warner Robins Police Department are spending the week in intensive classroom and hands-on training to become nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians. The course covers the latest safety standards, proper installation techniques, vehicle compatibility, and how to educate caregivers to ensure children are riding as safely as possible.

Car seat misuse remains one of the most common safety concerns for families — and these new CPSTs will help make a difference right here in our community.

We’re proud to invest in training that strengthens our department and enhances the safety of the families we serve.

Stay tuned for upcoming car seat check events!

🚶‍♂️ Walking to School Safety Tips 🚶‍♀️
1. Use Sidewalks and Crosswalks
Always walk on the sidewalk. If there isn’t one, walk facing traffic and as far off the road as possible. Cross streets at marked crosswalks or intersections.

2. Obey Traffic Signals
Only cross when the pedestrian signal says it’s safe. Don’t assume a driver sees you—make eye contact before stepping into the street.

3. Look Left, Right, Left Again
Before crossing any street, stop and look left, then right, then left again. Keep looking while you cross.

4. Stay Alert—No Phones or Earbuds
Avoid distractions. Keep your head up, eyes open, and ears free so you can hear approaching cars or emergency vehicles.

5. Walk in Groups When Possible
There’s safety in numbers. Walking with friends or siblings is safer and more fun.

6. Be Visible
Wear bright clothing and reflective gear, especially on cloudy mornings or during early/late hours.

7. Never Dart Out Between Parked Cars
Always walk to a crosswalk or corner before crossing. Drivers can’t see you if you’re between vehicles.

8. Know Your Route
Practice the route with your child until they’re confident and know what to do if something unexpected happens.

9. Teach Stranger Safety
Remind kids to never go anywhere with a stranger or talk to someone they don’t know, even if that person offers a ride or says there’s an emergency.

10. Report Unsafe Situations
Encourage kids to tell a trusted adult if they feel unsafe, see suspicious behavior, or encounter hazards on their route.

🚴‍♂️ As kids head back to school, make sure they stay safe on two wheels. Always wear a properly fitted helmet—it’s the simplest way to prevent serious head injuries. Dress in bright, snug-fitting clothes to stay visible and avoid anything that could get caught in the bike. Before every ride, check that the brakes work, the tires are full, and reflectors are clean. Kids should ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, and use proper hand signals when turning or stopping. Make sure their bike has lights or reflectors, especially during early morning or late afternoon rides. No phones, no headphones—distractions can be deadly. Teach them to ride at least three feet from parked cars to avoid doors opening suddenly. When crossing busy streets, it’s safest to get off the bike and walk it across. And before school starts, take a few practice rides together to reinforce good habits. Safety doesn’t just happen—it’s taught, practiced, and expected. Let’s keep our kids riding smart and getting to school safely.

🚴‍♂️ Back-to-School Bicycle Safety Tips 🚴‍♀️
Make Sure Your Kids Ride Smart and Stay Safe

Helmet On, Always.
No exceptions. A properly fitted helmet cuts the risk of head injury by over 80%.

Bright & Tight.
Wear bright colors and snug clothes—no loose straps or shoelaces that could catch.

Check the Bike.
Brakes work? Tires full? Reflectors clean? Give the bike a once-over before every ride.

Ride on the Right.
Ride with traffic, not against it. Use hand signals to turn or stop.

Be Seen. Be Heard.
Use lights and reflectors, especially early morning or late afternoon. A bell or horn is a plus.

No Phones or Headphones.
Distractions get kids hurt. Eyes up, ears open, hands on the handlebars.

Watch for Doors.
Teach kids to ride at least 3 feet from parked cars to avoid getting “doored.”

Cross Safely.
Get off the bike and walk it across busy streets or crosswalks.

Know the Route.
Stick to safe streets with less traffic and slower speeds. Avoid shortcuts through driveways or alleys.

Practice Makes Safe.
Ride the route with your kids a few times before school starts. Rehearse safe habits.

🚴‍♂️ Bicycle Helmet Safety Tips 🚴‍♀️
Protect your head every ride — helmets save lives!

✅ Always wear a helmet—no matter how short the ride.
âś… Make sure it fits snugly. It should sit level on your head and not rock back and forth.
âś… Strap it right. The chin strap should be tight enough that only 1-2 fingers fit underneath.
✅ Replace helmets after a crash or every 5 years—even if no damage is visible.
âś… Choose a certified helmet that meets safety standards (look for CPSC, ASTM, or Snell labels).
âś… Lead by example. Adults should wear helmets too!

Be smart. Be seen. Be safe. 🚴‍♂️🛡️
âś… Lead by example. Adults should wear helmets, too!
