Folk Music Society of Huntington

Folk Music Society of Huntington FMSH is Long Island’s leading all-volunteer, nonprofit presenter of traditional & modern folk music FMSH is also a member of the Long Island Arts Alliance.

Founded in the late 1960s, the Folk Music Society of Huntington (www.fmsh.org) generally presents two monthly concert series, a monthly folk jam, and an annual folk festival in conjunction with the Huntington Arts Council. Recognizing the importance of music in these challenging times, FMSH is continuing both its First Saturday Concerts and Hard Luck Café series online. FMSH is a member of the Hun

tington Arts Council and the Long Island Arts Alliance. Acknowledged as the musical conscience of society, folk music has preserved — in its variety of forms — the joys, struggles and sorrows of people worldwide. In the late 1960s, a small group of Long Island residents dedicated to the preservation of folk music founded the FMSH. Incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1970, its membership now numbers in the hundreds, while more than 1,500 people are on its email distribution list. FMSH cultivates new talent in both modern singer-songwriters and performers of traditional songs, while providing opportunities for all lovers of acoustic music to find their favorites. It’s a cheap date, too – concerts can be less than the cost of two drinks at a bar (a bit more for the better-known touring performers, of course), with refreshments available at very reasonable prices.

• First Saturday Concerts
Nationally and internationally-known touring artists are featured during the FMSH’s First Saturday Concerts Series. Although concert tickets are generally available for purchase at the door, you can now also use your credit card to securely buy tickets in advance for our First Saturday Concerts series using PayPal.

• Hard Luck Café
Since the 1960s, coffeehouses have served as smaller forums to see and hear local and regional artists. The Hard Luck Cafe, begun in 1992, strives to do the same by presenting local, regional and up-and-coming national touring artists in an intimate atmosphere. Held on the third Thursday of the month, from September through June, in the Sky Room at Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre, the Hard Luck Cafe usually features a split bill with two artists/groups. Refreshments – including beer and wine – are available for purchase.

• Open Mics
The perpetuation and preservation of folk music is not limited to “professional” artists. Folk music is the music of the people, and that includes all of us. To give the people a voice, an open mic precedes most of the First Saturday Concerts and the Hard Luck Cafe series. All participants must pay the regular admission fee.

• Parties
One of the Folk Music Society of Huntington’s oldest traditions, and one that helps foster a spirit of community among its members, has been the house parties held at various members’ homes after each First Saturday concert. Attendees are asked to bring a beverage or snack to share as they join others in spirited song and conversation.

• Folk Jams
To afford local amateur musicians and singers of all experience levels an opportunity to play, sing and hone their skills with others, the organization sponsors a series of monthly folk jams. These are held one Sunday afternoon a month at the South Huntington Public Library and are open to all. Attendees are asked to bring their instruments and/or voices, along with a snack or non-alcoholic beverage to share.

• Membership
Membership brings such benefits as advance notice of all concerts, an open invitation to parties following the First Saturday concerts, a sense of belonging to the folk community and of supporting an organization that’s helping to keep the music alive and, very importantly, discounted member-pricing at all events presented by the FMSH. This translates to a 20-30% discount on general-admission ticket prices. Memberships (as of 1/1/2019) are:
Single — for 1 yr is $25.00 — 2 yrs is $40.00
Family — for 1 yr is $40.00 — 2 yrs is $70.00

You can join the Folk Music Society of Huntington or renew your membership online, via the mail, or at any of our events. Affiliations
The Folk Music Society of Huntington is an active member of Folk Alliance International, the Huntington Arts Council and the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA).

Over the Father’s Day weekend, the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue, Huntington) will screen Harry Chapin – Cat’s in the Cradle: The Song That Changed Our Lives as follows:

Friday, June 19, at 4:45pm

Saturday, June 20, at 7pm

Sunday, June 21, at 4:45pm

The film tells the story of one of the most emotionally resonant songs in American history and the artist behind it, Harry Chapin – who lived in Huntington with his family. Released in 1974, “Cat’s in the Cradle” became an unexpected radio chart-topper, cutting through a disco-dominated era with a haunting folk ballad about fatherhood, regret, and the passage of time. More than fifty years later, the song’s impact is undiminished.

Using a blend of archival footage, performance clips, and interviews with Chapin’s family, bandmates, and a range of musicians and public figures that include Harry’s wife, Sandy Chapin, Billy Joel, Pat Benatar, Judy Collins, Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Darryl McDaniels (Run-DMC), Mandy Patinkin, Robert Lamm (Chicago), Whitfield Crane (Ugly Kid Joe) and more, Harry Chapin – Cat’s in the Cradle: The Song That Changed Our Lives traces Harry’s rise – from his breakout single “Taxi” in 1972, through the whirlwind years of touring and recording that followed the success of “Cat’s in the Cradle.” More than just a biography of an artist, the film is also a meditation on the enduring power of a song that has become part of the emotional vocabulary of generations.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Cinema or online via its website, cinemarartscentre.org.

Now is also the time to join, renew or upgrade your membership in LI’s premiere, independent, nonprofit arthouse theater during its Spring Membership Sale that extends through June.

TONIGHT — Monday, June 8 — at the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue, Huntington, NY): Enjoy a screening of the documentary Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune @ 7:30 p.m.

Phil Ochs was an American troubadour who passionately believed that he and his music could help change the world. Many of his songs became anthems for the anti-war movement during the turbulent 1960s, and his music continues to influence and inspire songwriters today – 50 years after his death. Among his best-known songs are “Changes,” “I Ain’t Marching Anymore,” “Small Circle of Friends,” “There But For Fortune,” and “When I’m Gone.” With the U.S. engaged in another foreign war today as it was in the 1960s, Phil Ochs’ music is as relevant today as it was then.

The Folk Music Society of Huntington (FMSH) joins with the Cinema Arts Centre in presenting Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune. The documentary features commentary by Joan Baez, Billy Bragg, Tom Hayden, Christopher Hitchens, Sean Penn, Pete Seeger, Peter Yarrow and others – interspersed with performance clips of Ochs. Described as “enthralling and fascinating” by Paper Magazine, the film paints what Entertainment Weekly calls “an essential portrait of an artist who ought to be better known.”

And on Wednesday, June 17 - 7-10 p.m.: A Phil Ochs Song Night featuring Greg Greenway, Reggie Harris and Pat Wictor will close out the 2025-2026 season of the monthly Hard Luck Café concert series co-presented by FMSH and the Cinema Arts Centre in the Cinema ‘s Sky Room. The three talented touring artists will perform both Phil’s songs and their own to show that the art of topical songwriting is still alive and well. An open mic at 7 p.m. precedes the 8 p.m. concert.

Tickets for both the film screening and the concert are available for purchase online @ cinemaartscentre.org and at the box office, while more information may also be found online @ FMSH.org.
