In Life We Trust: Memoirs to Create a Movement presents the work of 57 writers exploring the pressing issues of our time through their personal narratives. As they wrestle with the risks inherent in both speaking up and staying silent, and as they confront daily injustices both subtle and all too visible, they summon the courage to persist and persevere against all odds.

Written in spaces as varied as prisons and jails, refugee camps, shelters, worker centers, under-resourced classrooms, libraries, and art centers, these stories expand who writes literature and shift what literature can be and do.

This collection represents 25 years of story-shaping by Herstory Writers Network, a community memoir writing organization dedicated to changing hearts, minds, and policies one story at a time.

Edited by Ama R. Saran and Alison Turner.

In honor of the year Herstory began, we are offering
the Anthology at $19.96 for a limited time only.

In Celebration of our 30th anniversary, Herstory is thrilled to invite everyone who wrote in a Herstory workshop or participated in our facilitator training over our last thirty years to a special alumni reunion to take place Sunday, March 22 from 11:30 am - 2 pm. Light refreshments will be served.

The reunion is $25 per person and open to Herstory writers and facilitators, past and present, and their guests.

The alumni reunion will be followed by a 30th-anniversary celebration and the launch of In Life We Trust, a brand-new anthology of works produced by Herstory writers over the past three decades. The book launch and anniversary celebration, which will include readings from the collection, will be held from 2 to 4 pm, followed by a reception. Copies of In Life, We Trust will be for sale.

The launch and celebration are free and open to the public.

The reunion is for everyone who wrote in a Herstory workshop or participated in our facilitator training over our last thirty years. We invite you to reconnect with the people who wrote with you and make new Herstory family friends. Meet people from the first week of Herstory, back in 1996, and people who formed writing communities over the decades, as we break bread together, reminisce and celebrate.

Join us in celebrating Erika's 79th birthday and Herstory's 30th Anniversary!

"It is my birthday wish to be able to work ever more closely with the women who have been through the darkest moments of trafficking who are now the heroes and leaders in the movement.

Please help me raise the money to fund a special new online workshop for young children whose parents are in prison or jail, ages 5 to 15 and their guardians, to support our work with the women in Yaphank jail, as they dare to tell their stories with spirit, and to create new programing for the young people who are touched so deeply by the injustices of our world.

This is the work I want to be doing in my 80th year, still trying to find the secret and give voice to the people who know it, so that the cycles of violence and pain can be stopped.

Please help me celebrate my birthday with whatever amount you can donate to help Herstory pay the people who can make these programs happen, as they rebuild their own lives, turning their wounds and experiences to gold. "

Kris Janvier’s Herstory Story: The Making of A Poet

In 2013, Kris joined Herstory when he was a student at Hempstead High School, writing side by side with Hofstra University students. His family recognized that he had a gift for writing poetry and he was excited to see where it would take him. Little did he know that within the next ten years he would be an established poet.

After graduation, Kris knew that he wanted to continue writing with Herstory. When he started college at SUNY Old Westbury, he sought after another Herstory workshop at the Yes We Can Center. There he began writing his memoir, The Age of Legality, a poignant story about family love, poverty, and resilience, blending Creole rhythms into Herstory’s first spoken word piece.

Thinking back to that time, he reflected: “Being in the workshop, I felt like I was getting paid, but it wasn’t money I was getting.”

In reading The Age of Legality memoir publicly, Kris’ gift was revealed. Performing from memory, he gave voice to student hunger, moving audiences to tears and action. His power increased with each new delivery, and people noticed. He discovered that he could make an emotional connection with audiences; more and more he wanted to be in that space. “Something within me said I could go far with this,” he remembered. At one event, the poet laureate of Nassau County invited him into his network of performers, and soon Kris was regularly attending open mics, readings, and festivals.

Today Kris performs at open mic nights across Long Island and NYC. He has self-published three poetry collections, including his Drift Series on Amazon, contributes to The Scene Magazine, an online zine celebrating LI and NYC poets, and is active in the Multicultural Council of NY, championing diversity through art and culture.
