At the October 7 meeting, the St. Marys Rotary Club presented Rotary District Governor, Katherine Eboch, with a donation of 428 shoes.

Outside Rotary, Eboch is the Vice President of IT at Soles4Souls, a nonprofit that donates shoes to people in third-world countries so that they can start their own businesses.

Eboch set it as a personal goal to have all 58 Rotary clubs in her district donate shoes to the nonprofit.

Most people think recycling begins when the truck collects the bin. In reality, that is when the difficult part starts. By the time the material reaches the plant, paper, plastic, glass, and metal have been crushed together, mixed with food, plastic bags, wires, clothing, and batteries, and pushed onto a conveyor that cannot stop. The plant has only seconds to work out what each object is, where it should go, and whether it is still worth recovering.
