We’re high school seniors from Center Point, Alabama, and the founders of the School Success Box. As you all know, the Covid-19 pandemic has made money tight for many families. We’ve been very lucky to see our community rally together to organize food drives for families struggling to make ends m
eet. Recent Census reports revealed that as many as 26.3% of Center Point residents are living in poverty. A staggering 42-46% of 6-11 year-olds in Center Point live below the poverty line. 82% of our city's elementary school students qualify for the free lunch program. As we entered our final year of high school, we were left with the question: How are families who are struggling to put food on the table supposed to obtain basic school supplies for their children, and how can we help? While there are back-to-school drives at the beginning of the school year, they are typically short-lived and don’t provide students with enough supplies to last throughout the year. Inspired by the Little Free Library concept, we created the School Success Box. The School Success Box is filled with free school supplies and conveniently located near a school bus stop. The box is open to the community to take what they need/share what they'd like. Our hope is that this will alleviate stress for students and parents who need a helping hand from the community, and will give Center Point’s children the tools that they need to succeed. Our goal is to inspire others to share in our vision by creating School Success Boxes in their own communities. You can help us spread awareness by liking and sharing our page.
