Session 1 opened the 2026 season with sunshine, lake light, fresh greens, full clotheslines, paint-stained tables, and the familiar energy of artists settling into Hewnoaks.

From the porch at Rambling Timbers to the dock at Kezar Lake, the property came back to life through small daily rituals: materials spread across studio tables, works-in-progress taking shape, and shared meals and conversation around the picnic table.

We’re grateful to this first group of artists-in-residence for beginning the season with such care, curiosity, and creative momentum!

Swipe through for glimpses from the first week of the season, and to the final slide to meet the artists of Session 1.✨

Mark your calendar - Wild Light returns August 22, 2026! 🌲 ☀️

Join us for Hewnoaks' annual day of art, music, and gathering on Kezar Lake – a chance to wander the grounds, meet artists, enjoy art, and spend an afternoon immersed in the natural landscape that makes Hewnoaks so very special.

As always, Wild Light is free and open to all. This year's exhibition is curated by Nate Luce, a two-time Hewnoaks alumnus whose vision for the day centers on what the natural world gives us – and the many ways artists listen to it.

Bring your family, your neighbors, and your curiosity! Light refreshments will be available, and artworks will be for sale.

📅 Saturday, August 22, 2026
🕒 3-7 PM
📍 Hewnoaks (68 Hewnoaks Road, Lovell, Maine)
🎟 Free & open to the public

A warm Hewnoaks welcome to this year's Indigo Arts Alliance Artists-in-Residence alumni @ Hewnoaks, Stephen Hamilton and Anna Tsouhlarakis!

Through our ongoing partnership with Indigo Arts Alliance, we're grateful to offer IAA alumni Artists-in-Residence (AiRs) the gift of time to slow down, dig deeper, and be in community with the land, each other, and fellow residents. Every year, this exclusive opportunity invites them into weeklong or 10-day residencies selected through Hewnoaks’ annual juried application process, representing our organization’s shared commitment to create spaces where Black and Brown artists can build lasting relationships, experiment, and grow.

Swipe to meet Stephen Hamilton, ’25 IAA Mentorship AiR, and Anna Tsouhlarakis, ’24 IAA Mentorship AiR, and discover the work and ideas they're bringing to Hewnoaks this summer.

We're so grateful to hold space for their practices and can't wait to witness what grows here. Welcome, Stephen and Anna!

They dusted. They scrubbed. They shared meals. They met new friends and reconnected with old ones. And somewhere in the middle of it all, they made meaningful art.

^That was Opening Session. 🤩 This brand-new stewardship program is a hands-on way to help us wake up the property before the season begins, while offering time and space for each Steward's creative practice along the way. It's intentionally small, intentionally communal, and this first cohort set the bar high.

A giant thank you to every Steward who showed up with their hands and their hearts! 🧡

In a recent conversation on the Everything Cookbooks podcast, Kathy Gunst shared something that stuck with us: that going on a writing retreat is, more than anything, a way of saying "this matters to me, my writing, my voice, my work." And that by the time you arrive, you've already made the harder commitment - the psychological one. The rest is just showing up.

She also shared that on the first day of every workshop she leads, she asks her students what they hope to walk away with. 90% of the time, the answer is the same - they want more confidence, they want to believe in themselves as writers. She hears it so often, she calls it a "national condition."

But by the end of the week, she said something shifts - she watches her students transform on the page, trust themselves, and find a voice that's actually theirs...

This July 26 - August 1, Kathy returns to Hewnoaks to lead Finding Voice: A Food & Memoir Writing Workshop, giving ten writers a chance to do exactly that. There are 4 spots remaining. Applications open until June 1.

For the first time, we’re offering a residency that anyone can book.

Introducing the Sustaining Sessions — two new paid residency sessions open to any artist who wants unencumbered time at Hewnoaks. No application. No jury. No selection process. Reserve a cabin, and it's yours (during peak foliage!).

Hewnoaks' summer residency is made possible by the grants and donations that sustain it. These sessions are another way to support our mission: every cabin booked this fall directly funds the free residencies we'll offer this season, next year, and beyond.

🍂 Session A: Sept. 27-30, 2026
🍂 Session B: Oct. 1-4, 2026
🍂 Session C: Sept. 27-Oct. 4, 2026 (full week discounted rate)

Pricing is per cabin, not per person — come solo or share with a fellow artist. Spots are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration closes July 27th or when fully booked.
