"You can't have candy canes, or it will kill your supply!"
There are no published studies linking peppermint/menthol with loss of breastmilk supply. While there is anecdotal evidence that high doses of peppermint essential oils may affect nursing, no research has been done.
However, many families DO struggle with maintaining nursing frequency during the holidays. Try to keep baby close and milk flowing (with either baby or pump) even while traveling, shopping, or visiting family and friends.

Are you currently breastfeeding or chestfeeding one infant under a year old?

A researcher at Texas Woman’s University is studying the lactation experiences of those who are latching their baby to the breast or chest at least some of the time. This survey is open to anyone who lives in the United States and can read or write in the English language. If you participated in the first round of this survey between January and May 2023 you are NOT eligible, we are looking for a completely separate sample. This survey will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete. Participation in this study is voluntary.

Visit https://twu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0OZVoLiVQYVi0WW to learn more about the study and to access the survey. There is a potential risk of loss of confidentiality in all email, downloading, electronic meetings, and internet transactions. If you know anyone who may be interested in participating in this study, please share this information with them. If you have any questions, please contact Kelsie Barta (researcher) at [email protected] or Misty M. Richmond, Ph.D. PMHNP-BC (research advisor) at [email protected].

Upon completion of the survey, you can participate in a drawing for a bookstore (Barnes and Noble) gift card. You will need to provide your email, but it will be separated from the survey data for anonymity.

If you lost power and your milk in the freezer still has ice crystals, it may be refrozen. If it has fully defrosted, it should be used within 24-48 hours.

Have you ever wondered what you can do at a La Leche League meeting?

You can offer your support and experience to other parents. Our meetings have been based on parent-to-parent support for 65+ years.

🎙️ La Leche League International applauds the Lancet's new three-article series on breastfeeding that will be launched on 8 February with an online event. Everyone can join the online event, which is co-hosted by the World Health Organization, The Lancet, and Children in All Policies. Live stream starts at 12.30 UTC, ends at 14.00 UTC (13.30 CET, 15.00 CET) and can be accessed here:
https://www.who.int/news-room/events/detail/2023/02/08/default-calendar/launch-of-the-2023-lancet-series-on-breastfeeding--including-the-influence-of-commercial-milk-formula-marketing

Topics:
Infant behaviours, feeding practices and multisectoral interventions to support breastfeeding.

How baby behaviours are misconstrued to undermine breastfeeding, but multi-sectoral interventions protect its health impacts.

How the formula marketing ‘playbook’ targets parents, health professionals and politicians and undermines the health and rights of children and mothers.

How power imbalances and political and economic structures determine feeding practices, women’s rights and health outcomes.

📢Authors call for breastfeeding to be a collective responsibility, that is effectively protected, promoted and supported at all levels.

Hooray! It finally happened! Both the PUMP Act and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act have passed the Senate with overwhelming bi-partisan support as amendments to the omnibus spending bill. The omnibus spending bill is expected to pass in the next day. After that, the bill goes to the President’s desk for his signature. Once the bills become effective, all workers will have the right to time and a clean space to express milk during their work day and will have recourse if the right is denied.

Thank you to everyone who contacted your lawmakers over this very long journey for passage in both the House and the Senate. Thanks to you, we have closed much of the gap which left millions of working parents without the workplace lactation protections they need.

Have you experienced a dip in over the holidays? What helped you stay nursing? Share your tips for ! Or did you use the busy holidays as a time to wean your older child?
Some things that can help include:
- babywearing to keep baby close and your hands free
- bringing baby with you to parties rather than leaving them at home
- letting go of some duties. Not everything has to happen, and it doesn't have to be done by you!
- asking for help
- scheduling nursing breaks for yourself and baby
