Dolly Parton’s impact goes far beyond music. 📚❤️

Through her Imagination Library, Dolly has helped put books into the hands of children around the world, inspiring a love of reading from an early age. The program mails free, age-appropriate books to children from birth to age five—helping families build home libraries and making literacy more accessible.

What began as a program in her home county in Tennessee has grown into an extraordinary literacy movement, delivering millions of books to young readers.

A beautiful reminder that one of the greatest gifts we can give a child is the opportunity to read, imagine, and dream. ✨📖

ALA is heartbroken at the passing of country music legend, cultural icon, and champion of literacy Dolly Parton.

Dolly’s award-winning Imagination Library initiative, inspired by her father’s inability to read or write, has put hundreds of millions of free books into the hands of children across America and was considered by her to be one of her greatest achievements.

“We’re giving books to kids who wouldn’t have a chance to get them otherwise,” she told American Libraries in a 2018 interview. “A lot of people think this is just for poor children—it’s for all children. It’s important to get books into the hands of any child that we can.”

ALA was proud to confer Dolly with an honorary lifetime membership, the Association’s highest honor, in 2023 for her lasting impact on librarianship, libraries, and the communities they serve.

Dolly was also part of ALA’s Celebrity READ campaign, in which she holds a copy of 'The Little Engine That Could.'

“I’ve always related to that book because I’m the little engine that did!” she said.

Just a reminder, We accept any and all types of media as long as the content fits our mission. So if you have DVDs, VHS, Audiobooks on CD or tape, as well as books, we will accept any/all of them as donations.

We have received our second shipment of books from LGBTQ Book Love OH. They always come through for us and we look forward to adding these to our free, not so little, library.

Mission Update 08/02/2026

We have been spending the last month gathering more books and finding more events to set up at. Here are the events we have scheduled:

Saturday, September 12th: Darke County Pride
Look forward to a good selection of books as we set up for our first event ever! We will be at Darke County Pride from Noon to 6pm.

Saturday, October 17th: Small Town Pride - Celina
Our home town pride event! We've loved this event for years and we're super happy to finally be vending there. We're looking to be set up with the normal selection of books but we also hope to have DVDs and other goodies.
