What do you know about the Liberty Tree? Chairman Francis Gray ensured that the Piscataway Conoy tribe were a part of history this day! Read below!

Maryland is the only original colony that saved its Liberty Tree.

In the years before the Revolution, people gathered under Liberty Trees to organize — to argue over rights, self-government, and whether to break from England. Maryland's stood in Annapolis, chosen by its citizens in 1775, and survived the entire Revolutionary era. When a hurricane finally brought it down in 1999, Maryland was the only one of the thirteen original colonies that had already banked its DNA — preserving exact replicas so the tree could live on.

This month, one of those saplings — grown from the original tree's DNA — took root in Southern Maryland. We gathered at Piscataway Park in Prince George's County to plant it, overlooking the Potomac River and Mount Vernon, on a landscape with deep ties to the Piscataway people and generations of Maryland history.

The planting brought together the Tribal Chair of the Piscataway Conoy (Chairman Francis Gray), the Chief of the Piscataway Indian Nation (Chief Mark Tayac); Maryland Delegate Jamila Woods; NPS Superintendent Serena Bellew, David Armenti of the Maryland Center for History and Culture, Roderick Lewis from Senator Van Hollen’s office, Anjela Barnes of the Accokeek Foundation; Meagan Baco of the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area; and our Executive Director, Lucille Walker.

It's one of 24 planted across the state this year, marking America's 250th. The trees are new. The idea behind them — show up, take part — is as old as the Revolution.

The Long Table is a documentary we're producing about the people and places that make this region what it is. (If you saw our post about filming at Historic Sotterley earlier this month, this is that project.)

For the film, we recently had the honor of sitting down with Francis Gray, Tribal Chairman of the Piscataway Conoy Tribe at Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary

His story has stayed with us for days.

Chairman Gray spoke about the generations who kept Piscataway culture and identity alive, even through the most difficult times. As Chairman Gray stated: "We have always been here."

It's a story of continuity and resilience — of a culture that is very much alive today.
More to come as The Long Table takes shape.
