BARN QUILTS - a day-long folk painting workshop with

Barn Quilts have been adorning family farms for centuries. European immigrants have continued this tradition, creating the Americana Folk Art we see on barns throughout America today. Create your own 2′ x 2′ outdoor suitable Barn Quilt in this guided, start‑to‑finish workshop. Each student will receive a primed MDO board with two designs lightly pre‑drawn—one modern (a gull on the beach) and one traditional—so you can choose the style that speaks to you. While the pre‑drawing saves time, Maribeth will also demonstrate how to lay out and draw a barn‑quilt pattern yourself.

You’ll learn the full taping and painting process: applying tape cleanly, scoring edges for crisp lines, sealing with clear acrylic matte, and brushing or rolling on three coats of exterior paint for each color.

Leave with a barn quilt of your own that tells a story of place!

FORAGING THE NORTHWOODS 🫐🫐🫐

This immersive, seasonally guided foraging course invites students to develop a deeper relationship with the landscapes of Northern Michigan. Moving beyond basic plant identification, this class explores wild foods as an entry point into ecological literacy, cultural awareness, and personal connection with place. Not only foraging for food, but for medicine and art as well.

Through the cycle of the seasons, students will learn to recognize, ethically harvest, and prepare a selection of regionally unique species. From spring wild leeks to summer berries, autumn acorns, and winter resources, these natural gifts are often overlooked. We will explore not only what can be gathered, but why these plants matter ecologically and culturally to Northern Michigan.

You’ll learn from Cameron Mansell, a Northern Michigan naturalist and forager with a background in fisheries & wildlife management, and invasive species education. He has worked with tribal natural resource programs and enjoys weaving ecological knowledge, Indigenous plant names, and seasonal awareness into his teaching.

A bittersweet farewell to Lauren, our folk school magic maker, doodler, shadow-puppeteer, deep-feeler, lover of wool, mover & shaker, lake-dipper, and maybe most of all, a teacher of wisdom beyond her years.

is leaving the folk school today and moves on to the next chapter in her career, but if you have experienced Green Door, you will undoubtedly be touched by Lauren’s work. She created programming and student experiences that have helped establish who we are. She learned and evolved in an environment that was a blank page before she arrived. She taught us all how to be more compassionate and tender-hearted. She most certainly leaves Green Door better than she found it, and we are forever grateful.

Thank you for the wisdom

THE LIVING RECORDS ꩜꩜꩜ with

Weaving through all things is a vast energetic field of wisdom and support called the Akashic Records. These Records are analogous to an infinite filing system in the Universe, an energetic library, of every life your soul has lived – past, present, and future. The Records are an incredibly grounded, practical, and transformational tool that restores you to a place of autonomy on your path, activates magic and miracles, anchors you into self-trust, and builds a relationship to the energies within and around you that are supporting you through all of space and time. They are also a direct channel to your highest self, guides, angels, loved ones who’ve passed, spiritual masters and teachers, ancestors, and the Divine.

In this class, students will learn what the Akashic Records are, how to access them, the multitude of ways messages can be received, the difference between intuition and spirit guides, and creating ritual to integrate this practice into their everyday life. They will walk away with a deeper sense of self-trust and expanded awareness of inner resourcing and support.

INTRODUCTION TO EARTHEN PLASTERING 🌞🌞🌞

Spend a weekend immersed in sustainable building as you get hands-on experience mixing and plastering a home in Bear Lake, Michigan!

Using local materials, students will learn the basics of mixing and applying earthen basecoat plaster. We will discuss the history of these materials, but focus on modern applications and how they can be used in homes in our region. Primarily, this will be a hands-on, practical application of earthen plaster on the interior walls of a Bear Lake home. Students will walk away with a deeper understanding of the materials and their possible uses.

If you’re committed to sustainability, are curious about earthen materials, or have a dream building project of your own, this is the class for you!

Students coming from out of town are welcome to camp on the project property.

INTRODUCTION TO EARTHEN PLASTERING
June 20th – 21st @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm each day

POCKET PAINTINGS 🖼️🖼️🖼️

Join Carrie J Palmer to hike, sketch, and paint!

In this workshop, students will approach landscapes with a playful eye. Using traditional watercolor techniques and mark-making, we will create beautiful, colorful landscapes.

We will start the day with a hike around Green Door Folk School and Cedar North @ J2 Farms at Julie Botsford Reznich, gathering inspiration, photos for reference, and playing in a sketchbook. We will return to the classroom for lunch and a brief demonstration before working on a final landscape painting as a memory of your day.

Participants can expect to learn new watercolor techniques. Everyone will create a painting that captures a memory of their day. Leave with some art supplies and hopefully a renewed sense of creativity!
