Native spiritual ceremonies were outlawed by the government from 1883 to 1978 under a set of rules promulgated under Secretary of Interior Henry Teller called "The Code of Indian Offenses" which were to be used by Indian agents in their efforts to "kill the Indian to save the man". It was the breaking of this rule with the ghost dance ceremonies that allowed agents to call in the military which eventually resulted in the Wounded Knee massacre. We did not give our ceremonies up, we just went underground with them.
In 1978 the American Indian Religious Freedom Act was passed by Congress and signed into law on Aug 11, 1978 by then President Jimmy Carter. Pictured is an inipi or sweat lodge.

Sheesh I can’t even get a can of beans donated to us so I just buy it all but ya Feed American is huge hustle they are the monopoly the entire food insecurity, industry here locally all the businesses donate to them and them alone so small nonprofits like us are never helped by any of these huge conglomerate nonprofits that supposedly defeat the hunger but yet pay themselves $1 million a year isnt that ridiculous they will not help us simply because I refuse to ask for drivers license or IDs from people to feed them. I will not do that if you’re hungry you’re hungry so they told me due to the fact that I may be giving illegal aliens food they completely stopped our program completely so now we do what we can I work just to buy the food to give out to the poor.
