Jesus didn't call His church to make attenders. He called us to make disciples.
That's easy to miss in the Great Commission, but grammatically, there's only one command in it: Go and make disciples.
A disciple isn't just someone who shows up. It's a devoted learner and imitator of Jesus, becoming less like our sin and more like our Savior (Luke 6:40). But here's the catch: over the last 50 years, the American church has quietly traded that priority for another one: more people, more chairs, and more relevance. A fuller room started to feel like the real win.
But Jesus wasn't after attenders. He was after disciples, because that's what makes a church healthy and powerful, not its size. The new Christians of Acts 2 didn't just convert; they devoted themselves. And what followed wasn't just growth; it was pure awe of God.
Jesus' call leaves two key questions for us:
Are you actually a devoted follower of Jesus, or have you been merely an attender?
And who has God put in your life that you could help take one step closer to Jesus?
