April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month!
Did you know the Cedar Rapids Metro Parkinson’s Association officially became a non-profit organization in 2017?
However, we’ve been offering free exercise classes and support group meetings long before that! Our classes started in the gymnasium of a local church on the Southwest side of CR. As the number of participants increased, we started offering classes at a second location on the NE side of town.

Since becoming a non-profit, we continue to offer free classes, a monthly support group, plus free resources and information on PD. Our Eastern Iowa Resource Guide is distributed to local healthcare providers to connect patients with local and national resources and programs to assist in living their best life possible with Parkinson’s. Our programs are proudly held now at the The Chris & Suzy DeWolf Family Innovation Center for Aging & Dementia.

Great news!

📣 Important progress in the campaign to ban paraquat! Syngenta, the largest manufacturer of paraquat, just announced it will cease production in June 2026. Paraquat is a highly toxic herbicide linked to an increased risk of PD. While this news is very encouraging, we must continue to pursue a full ban 🚫 on the use of paraquat in the U.S.

Already a delicate balance, Parkinson’s symptom management can be even trickier in the hospital because:

🚶 People often do not get enough movement opportunities.
⏱️ Parkinson’s medications may not be given following the at-home schedule.
💊 Medications that worsen PD are sometimes prescribed.
🚫 PD medication doses are often delayed or missed.

These 5 Hospital Care Needs outline the importance adhering to Parkinson’s guidelines during planned or unplanned hospital stays. Learn more for Patient Safety Awareness Week by ordering or downloading your free Hospital Safety Guide: Parkinson.org/HospitalSafety
