Workshop Class Descriptions

Currently, we offer: a) 3-4 day workshops, b) online writing workshops for veterans who may be unable to attend face-to-face workshops, and c) an annual public venue for vets to read or exhibit their work. The weekend writing workshop, taught by Emma Rainey and additional writers, poets and playwrights, will include writing exercises designed to get the vet writer goin

g, while providing safety and pacing for the veteran, along with readings from other published veterans and writers, and then discussion/reading sessions regarding the revision process. Resources will include weekly online follow up, creating an on-going writing group, and possible publication or public reading for those veterans interested in sharing their work. The writing workshop begins on Friday evening with a meeting from 7:30-9 p.m. Saturday and will consist of workshops from 9 a.m. Writing classes, such as “Getting Going”, cover how the workshop participant can begin the writing process and mine stories buried inside. Other classes include: Characterization and the techniques for recalling details about people; Poetry and experimentation using photographs and memories; Playwriting helps craft stories from varying perspectives; Dialogue and Description classes discuss strategies for making writing come alive using all five senses. The final workshops on Sunday will finish at noon, followed by a final meal together. The workshop’s primary aim is not to generate work of literary quality—although this may happen—rather, it is a tool to help veterans write about feelings, clarify nebulous thoughts, and reflect on events in a way that may lead to greater insight, creativity, and healing.
