The sport was originally developed in France in the early 70’s and was introduced to the United States in the early 80’s eventually leading to the formal organization of the United States Power Soccer Association (USPSA) in 2006. Power Soccer is the first competitive team sport designed and developed specifically for power wheelchair users. These participants include persons with quadriplegia, mul
tiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, head trauma, stroke, spinal cord injury and other disabilities. Power Soccer combines the skill of the wheelchair user with the speed and power of the chair itself, to participate in an extremely challenging game similar to soccer. In 2017 the United States is hosting the Power Soccer World Cup in Florida (see fipfaworldcup.org for more information). We are excited to be a part of a worldwide growing sport for power wheelchair athletes! We are currently the only athletic program in Eastern Iowa serving power wheelchair users. Power wheelchair users generally have less upper body strength and are therefore excluded from traditional competitive wheelchair sports (i.e. wheelchair basketball, hand cycling, adapted track and field, sled hockey, etc.). We hope to serve this underserved community through a fun, competitive, growing sport! Being a part of a competitive team sport provides not only cardio benefits for individuals in power wheelchairs, but can also greatly increase overall mental health.
