Today is National Purple Heart Day.

For many people, the Purple Heart is seen as just another military medal. But for those who have earned it, the story behind it is often far more painful than most will ever know.

The Purple Heart is awarded to those wounded or killed in combat, but what it truly represents cannot be captured by a ribbon and medal. For many recipients, it marks the worst day of their lives—the day they were wounded, the day they watched brothers and sisters fall, the day they came closer to not making it home than most can imagine.

Many Purple Hearts are tucked away in drawers, shadow boxes, or safes, rarely displayed. Not because the recipients aren't proud of their service, but because that medal is a reminder of trauma, loss, pain, and memories they carry every day.

And for some families, the Purple Heart was never pinned on the chest of the service member who earned it. Instead, it was presented to a spouse, parent, child, or loved one because their hero paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Today, on National Purple Heart Day, take a moment to look beyond the medal. Remember the stories, the sacrifices, the wounds both visible and invisible, and the families forever changed by war.

To all Purple Heart recipients and Gold Star families: we honor your sacrifice, we remember your service, and we thank you for the price you paid in defense of our nation.
