The Words We Use Matter!

The language we use when talking about adoption matters. Being mindful of our words helps create a more respectful and supportive environment for everyone touched by adoption.

Consider using adoption-positive language:

✅ Birth parent instead of real parent
✅ Child placed for adoption instead of unwanted child
✅ Made an adoption plan instead of gave up

It is also important to remember that every person's adoption experience is unique, and individuals may have their own preferences regarding the language used to describe it. When in doubt, the best thing to do is ask.

A big thank you to the Iowa Humane Alliance for hosting their Pet Festival at Harambee House again this year! 🐶🐱 Community members received free pet vaccines, pet supplies, and access to spay and neuter resources. We appreciate this partnership and the positive difference it's making for families and pets in our neighborhood.

The Center for Adoption Support and Education (C.A.S.E.) collaborated with field experts and parents experiencing adoption to develop the definition of what an adoption-competent mental health professional is.

TAC provides specific training to ensure mental health professionals develop the knowledge, skills and values to practice in an adoption-competent manner.
