Post from Caleb (Beckham's dad) March 15th
So for those that don't know. Thursday March 5 Lacie and myself got called while we were at work. Beckham, our baby boy had stopped breathing while he was napping. The ambulance was called and between the paramedics and the babysitter they did 50 straight minutes of CPR. They were able to resuscitate Beckham and the emergency room team at St. Lukes was able to get him stable enough to be air lifted to the University of Iowa Children's Hospital. He has been in the PICU here since then fighting for his life. The staff here has been incredible and his vitals have all improved while he has been here. Unfortunately because his brain was without oxygen for so long, he has had very little brain activity that hasn't improved and no doctor has seen improvement from his type and severity of injury. We sat down with the doctors over these past few days and they have told us there is nothing more medically they can do for him. His brain injury is too severe.
Knowing that he can't breathe on his own and no sign of regular brain activity, Lacie and I have had to make a decision that no parent should ever have to make. Do we take him home when he can't breathe on his own, and can't open his eyes, and can't communicate with us? Or do we let our baby boy go be with God and watch over our family and protect us from Heaven? After many heartfelt talks with each other and with the doctors and nurses, we decided that the right choice for Beckham, as hard as it is, is to let our baby boy go be with God. We have made the choice to withdraw care knowing that we would not be able to give him any sort of life outside of this hospital.
Our hearts are broken and we don't understand how this could happen to any one, let alone our 5 month old baby. Our lives will never be the same but we know he will be with God. Lacie, Emmitt, and myself will have our own little Angel looking down on us from Heaven. The support we have been receiving from everyone has been amazing through this time and we will continue to lean on each other and the tremendous group of people that were fighting alongside us the entire time. We want you all to know that Beckham fought as hard as he could and we are so proud of him! Please remember our happy, chunky, beautiful baby boy and please hug your kiddos tight for all of us π
