Gems of Hope Youth Advisory Board The Gems of Hope Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is comprised of high school students from Cedar Rapids area schools.

Our focus is developing youth-related programs and events to help support those who have been personally affected by a cancer diagnosis.

Meet the YAB Monday! Our next board member is Olivia Scott. Olivia is a senior at Kennedy High School. Outside of the YAB she is involved in Key Club, NHS, Best Buddies, Mentors in Violence Prevention, and Green Bandana. Sadly, a year ago Olivia’s grandpa passed away from bone cancer. Olivia feels a personal connection to YAB’s mission in remembrance of his fight and journey with cancer. YAB also gives her the opportunity to spread hope to those in an extremely difficult situation, which is why she is genuinely grateful to be apart of something so special!

Meet the Youth Board Monday! Introducing another member of the YAB, Ellie Koechner. Ellie is a senior at Xavier High School. Outside of the board she is involved in Key Club, Spanish Club, Communities and plays soccer for her high school. Ellie joined the Youth Advisory Board to help those who have been impacted by cancer and remind them that they are not alone!

Meet the Youth Board Monday! Introducing another member of the YAB, Lia Scharnau. Lia is a senior at Linn-Mar High School. Outside of the board she is co-president of Thespians and co-captain for contest speech. Lia is also involved in orchestra, diving, Social Justice Club, and ALO which is a minority leadership organization. She joined the Youth Advisory Board because her dad passed away from pancreatic cancer when she was 13. Lia wants to help those who are facing cancer and remind them there is a whole community behind them.

Meet the Youth Board Monday! Introducing our first member of the YAB 2021-2022, Lauren Whinery. Lauren is a senior at Prairie High School. She is involved in Key Club, Student Council, Business Professionals of America, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Green Bandana Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Softball, and Iowa BIG. Lauren joined the Youth Advisory Board because cancer has affected many of her family and friends and is very near to her heart. After doing an Iowa BIG project with Gems of Hope, she knew she wanted to do more to make even more of an impact on lives who have been impacted by cancer and help inspire hope to those who are going through hard times.

Happy Monday! Today we introduce you to Emma Hearn. She is a senior at Center Point-Urbana High School, and takes some Kirkwood classes. She is involved in FCA, 4-H, County Council, Storm Troopers, Volunteering, activities in her church. Emma joined Gems of Hope Youth Advisory Board because, cancer has been in her family in many ways and she knows how it affects family’s and she wants to help other family’s get through it.

Happy Monday!! This week we want to Natalie Knapp! She is currently homeschooled and attending kirkwood full time. She’s involved with Key Club, Teens Against Human Trafficking, Mock Trial, Speech March for Our Lives, volunteering, theatre. Natalie is in Gems of Hope because cancer has personally effected her family and she would like to make a positive impact in the lives of other students who have seen or experienced the repercussions of cancer first hand! Happy Monday! We wanted to introduce you to Emma Speer. She is a junior at Prairie High School. She’s involved in Choir, Show Choir, Student Council, and Key Club. Emma joined Gems of Hope because her Grandma was affected by cancer, and she lived with us while going through treatment. She wants to help support other kids who were going through the same thing. She joined Gems of Hope because she loves helping people and she wants to make a difference. She also has family members that have dealt with cancer and some that still are.
