September marks National Su***de Prevention Month.

But here is the uncomfortable truth:

Mental health is still too often treated as something to hide. Too many people are told, "My door is always open," only to find that when they finally reach out, the support isn't really there.

Right now, across this country, tens of thousands of families are grieving loved ones lost to su***de. At this very moment, veterans, service members, first responders, and everyday Americans are fighting battles nobody can see, trying to find a reason to stay another day.

I know that fight personally.

After multiple su***de attempts, I understand what it feels like to believe there is no way forward. I understand the darkness, the isolation, and the feeling that nobody could possibly understand.

But I also know this:

Recovery starts with one simple step that can feel impossible in the moment.

Pick up the phone.

Send the text.

Make the call.

Reach out.

Talk to someone.

Use the resources available to you.

That one conversation may not solve everything overnight, but it can be the difference between suffering alone and beginning the journey toward healing.

If you're struggling today, please know that your story is not over. There are people who care. There are people who will listen. There are people who will stand beside you until you find your footing again.

And for those who are doing okay right now, check on your people. The strongest smile in the room often hides the deepest pain.

This month, let's do more than raise awareness. Let's break the stigma. Let's have the hard conversations. Let's be the support we wish existed when we needed it most.

One call.
One conversation.
One life saved.

๐Ÿšจ MAJOR UPDATE!!!! ๐Ÿšจ
Now that we have received the approval to Honor these Heroes we have added 3 more of the soldiers who gave their lives on March 1st 2026.

Every year, one of the most meaningful moments of our Salute to the Troops Ball is recognizing three military members and three first responders whose dedication, sacrifice, and service make a difference in the lives of others. It is a night of celebration, gratitude, and honoring those who continue to answer the call.

This year, that mission takes on an even deeper meaning.

While we will proudly recognize six extraordinary heroes for their service, we will also pause to honor seven American soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. Together with their families, we will pay tribute to their courage, their commitment, and the legacy they leave behind.

Iowa National Guard โ€“ 113th Cavalry
โ€ข Staff Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar
โ€ข Staff Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard

Army Reserve โ€“ 103rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command.
โ€ข Sgt. Declan Coady
โ€ข Maj Jeffrey Oโ€™Brien
โ€ข CW3 Robert Marzan
โ€ข MSG Nicole Amor
โ€ข MSG Noah Tietjens

These heroes answered our nation's call without hesitation. They stood watch for all of us. They served with honor, and they gave everything.

Their names will be spoken. Their stories will be shared. Their sacrifices will be remembered.

Join us for an evening of celebration, remembrance, and reflection as we honor those still serving, recognize those who continue to make a difference, and pay tribute to those who never came home.

Because freedom is not free. It is secured by men and women willing to sacrifice everything for a cause greater than themselves.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Honor the Living. Remember the Fallen. Preserve Their Legacy.

๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Heroes Christmas Gala in Cedar Rapids โ€” Sal Gonzalez.

Some heroes continue serving long after they take off the uniform.

Sal Gonzalez is a United States Marine Corps veteran whose story is one of sacrifice, resilience, and hope. Assigned to 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, Sal served as an infantry machine gunner during combat operations in **Ramadi, Iraq**. In 2004, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED), leaving him with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the loss of his left leg below the knee.

For many, those challenges would have been overwhelming. Instead, Sal chose a different path.

Through faith, determination, and the healing power of music, he transformed his struggles into a mission to inspire others. His journey has taken him across the country, performing on America's Got Talent, entertaining troops on USO Tours, appearing at the legendary Grand Ole Opry, and even performing on the television show Nashville.

Sal's music is more than entertainmentโ€”it's a testament to the strength of the human spirit and a reminder that even after life's darkest moments, purpose can still be found.

We are honored to have Sal join us as we come together to honor our nation's military heroes and first responders at this year's Heroes Christmas Gala. His story embodies everything this event stands for: sacrifice, service, perseverance, and hope.

Please help us welcome Marine veteran, warrior, and musician Sal Gonzalez to Cedar Rapids!

Today, we remember.

Five years ago, on August 26, 2021, 13 American heroes made the ultimate sacrifice at Abbey Gate during the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Eleven Marines, one Soldier, and one Sailor answered their nation's call and never came home.

For many Americans, it was a headline. For the families of these heroes, it was the day their world changed forever.

They were sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, and friends. They had dreams, plans, and futures ahead of them. Yet when duty called, they stood their post. In their final moments, they embodied the courage, selflessness, and commitment to others that define the very best of our nation.

Five years later, the grief remains. Empty chairs still sit at family gatherings. Children continue to grow up without a parent. Parents continue to mourn a son or daughter. The pain did not end on August 26, 2021โ€”it lives on every day in the hearts of those who loved them.

Today, we honor and remember:

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ U.S. Marine Corps
โ€ข Staff Sgt. Darin T. Hoover
โ€ข Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo
โ€ข Sgt. Nicole L. Gee
โ€ข Cpl. Hunter Lopez
โ€ข Cpl. Daegan W. Page
โ€ข Cpl. Humberto A. Sanchez
โ€ข Lance Cpl. David L. Espinoza
โ€ข Lance Cpl. Jared M. Schmitz
โ€ข Lance Cpl. Rylee J. McCollum
โ€ข Lance Cpl. Dylan R. Merola
โ€ข Lance Cpl. Kareem M. Nikoui

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ U.S. Army
โ€ข Staff Sgt. Ryan C. Knauss

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ U.S. Navy
โ€ข Hospital Corpsman Third Class Maxton W. Soviak

Their watch has ended, but our duty to remember never will.

Today, take a moment. Say their names. Fly a flag. Share their story. Teach the next generation about their sacrifice. Because a nation that remembers its fallen ensures they never truly leave us.

To the families of the Abbey Gate 13: your heroes are not forgotten. Their sacrifice, their service, and their legacy continue to live on.

Gone, but never forgotten.
