Over a year ago we planted hundreds of Cedars at the base of the dune on Seahorse Key. We’re so happy to see them thriving and helping to hold the base of the dune in place.

We checked on them this week and they’re lush, spreading out and bright green!

Thank you to everyone that helped make this possible!

We’ve mostly planted on the outer islands of the Cedar Keys as we think those are the most At-Risk and in the most need of coastal restoration.

But we have planted quite a bit of trees and plants on our main key, Way Key.

Last year we planted some experimental grass flats, that we grow in the nursery in the Cedar Key City Park. Beside the grass flats we planted ‘plugs’, which is the norm when planting grasses. The difference between the plugs and the flats is night and day. In one of the photos you see Dave Clark (), our plant expert, holding up the flat of grasses. Notice how thick the root system is before it even gets planted.

So after we considered last years experiment to be highly successful, we went ahead and planted 80 more flats of Panic Grass around the Cedar Key City Park. This will help hold the sand in the beach area and hopefully keep it from blowing up into the picnic area.

On top of all the usefulness it adds to holding in the shoreline, it just looks pretty and is zero maintenance!

Thank you to everyone that has helped and donated their time and monetary support to make this possible and at zero cost to any of the Cedar Key Residents.

Despite not having had substantial rain in months, the Dune Sunflowers we’ve planted on the islands are doing quite well.

The cedar trees have bronzed and are in serious shock, but they’re not dead. Hopefully we can get some rain in the coming months and they’ll re-green and come back to life.

Grasses and ground cover seem to be very tolerant of the drought conditions.

We think we’ll stick to putting grasses and ground cover in for the rest of the year.

Say some prayers for some rain

Spent the last few days adding hundreds of Cedar trees to act as a windrow along the edge of Old Fennimore Mill.

We also took advantage of a high tide and put another 120 trees along a few of the smaller islands just to try and get some roots in the ground

With this week of planting, we’ve surpassed the 15,000 mark of plants in the ground. Not bad for just over a year of trying to ReCedar the keys

We’re sure a lot of you have dealt with this winters record breaking cold snap. We’ve been noticing a lot of mangrove die-off front the recent frosts.

We know that there is a love hate relationship with these Black Mangroves we have growing all around our shorelines, but they’re a major source of protection when it comes to wave action during storms. They’re also a huge habitat for native wildlife and help hold in the soils as our tides shift constantly.

We recently met with the folks from to talk about how we could replant more of these Black Mangroves on our surrounding outer islands as a first line of defense from storm surges.

What we’d like to ask of you as the general public here in and around the Nature Coast, is if you have mangroves that survived this past frost, would you be willing to mark them and pay attention to how they come back as spring and summer creeps up on us.

Come next fall, when the mangroves produce seeds, we’d like to harvest some seeds from the specimens that survived the cold snap to try and reproduce a mangrove that is more cold tolerant. One of our team members is an expert in propagation and this could help us help the shoreline for future generations.

We would only be planting on outer islands and especially a few of the islands that got destroyed by the past few storms that are too barren for us to plant trees on just yet.

We hope this makes sense and if you have questions, feel free to shoot us a DM or leave a comment.

You never know when an angel walks in and asks how they can help with our project.

We showed them our QR code and explained that they could make a donation through our website. She said she was having trouble with the site saying it couldn’t accept that amount.

When we asked if we could help this saint of a woman said she was trying to donate $10,000!!!

Flabbergasted with her generosity, we explained that sums in that amount usually are made in check form.

True to her word, a week or so later we received the check from her foundation which will help cover some of the costs of the Cedars we’ve planted so far!

Thank you from everyone that has been working so hard to restore our islands! Thank you .laperriere from all of us here in Cedar Key!!!

The young gentleman in the foreground is Trevor.

Trevor grew up here in Cedar Key. Trevor is only 26 years old and a perfect example of how this up and coming generation cares about conservation. He’s volunteered on almost every one of our planting excursions. He does this on his days off of work many times bringing his own boat to haul trees or plants.

We always thank Trevor profusely and he simply says “I hope to walk through a mature grove of trees on a protected beach with my children one day!”

Thank you Trevor and all the other amazing people that lend their time and hard work to put roots into their community to try and restore and protect our shorelines! We can’t thank you enough, but we hope your hard work will be enjoyed for generations to come

If you’re in Cedar Key this weekend, we put 25 flats of Railroad Vine in front of

Please take some and plant it on your property. They like full sun and usually bloom a pretty purple flower

We needed to make room for our Cedar trees in the nursery and we don’t have enough time to get these all in the ground on our own. So we’re asking for your help.

We’ll also be planting Cedars this coming Monday on Atsena Otie if anyone would like to help out. Meet us at the marina at 10:30am. Planning on the boats leaving at 11am

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving

One month shy of a full year since we first started this project and we’re over 13,000 plants in the ground to date!

It’s overwhelming to know of the outpouring of help we get from locals and visitors that come out to help. It’s all volunteers putting in hours of work with one purpose….lets reforest and replant the islands and surrounding landscape

Thank you to everyone that has helped. Whether it be from a donation, hours of volunteer work or just sharing the message about what we’re doing!

Looking forward to thousands more trees and native plants rooted to help stabilize this community
