Weโ€™re happy as some clams now that we got our thermal tolerance experiments up and running! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ˜ Water temperatures in the Gulf are higher than ever before, and our goal for these experiments is to simulate a marine heat wave in order to see how three bivalve species fair under various temperatures at two different salinities! ๐ŸŒŠ

GSI had a ๐Ÿš of a good time this weekend!

Our team assisted UF IFAS Nature Coast Biological Station and the Cedar Key community in cleaning up the devastating destruction that was left behind by Hurricane Idalia. We then helped Cedar Key Aquaculture Farms with debris pick up on the water and brought back some Northern Hard Clams, ๐˜”๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ข ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ข, to use for our upcoming thermal tolerance experiments! ๐Ÿ”ฅ GSI is still currently accepting donations to reach our goal of $500 to give directly back to the farmers who were impacted by this natural disaster. Mark your calendars! UF IFAS Shellfish Aquaculture Extension and FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute along with industry partners, have been engaged in a two-year monitoring and assessment project evaluating a broad range of factors in clam seed production facilities. These workshops will share findings focused on better understanding and alleviating seed mortality.

ATTENTION FLORIDA SHELLFISH GROWERS
Matthew Ajemian with FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is studying LARGE PREDATOR INTERACTIONS WITH SHELLFISH AQUACULTURE and would like shellfish growers to participate in a research study. The purpose of the study is to better understand interactions between large predators (fish, sharks, rays, and sea turtles) and the shellfish industry in Florida. A survey, completed by shellfish growers, will help to identify the extent and types of interactions being observed around the state, and guide experiments to explore mitigation methods, should they be deemed necessary. It should take no more than 10 minutes to complete the survey at this link: https://fau.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0AkTxBRSOHi2lDM.

We are excited to be part of this effort. Our All Clams On Deck initiative, with support from the Blue Community Consortium and guidance from multiple businesses, management agencies, universities, and NGOs, will prioritize research that can quantify environmental benefits and solidify best practices that maximize the contributions of restored clams and seagrass to our coastal ecosystems. https://www.allclamsondeck.org/press-release-florida-provides-global-leadership-for-coastal-restoration-with-seagrass-clams/
