MARCH 20 BLUESTEM IS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC FOR OUR ANNUAL PRESCRIBED FIRE.

Bluestem will reopen tomorrow Saturday 3/21.

Prescribed fire is one of our vital conservation practices that helps to reduce invasives in the fields, nourishes the soils, and serves to regenerate native species in the grassland habitats. Every year, we select areas of the grasslands for this management practice, and afterwards, watch how quickly the green shoots and sprouts emerge again from the ash. Learn more about prescribed fire at Bluestem on our website.

On Monday, March 23, from 12-2PM, staff and volunteers will be working in the burned areas -- clearing gravemarkers and stones, reseeding sites with native species and replacing pine straw cover as necessary. Contact us if you wish to join the effort! And if you are visiting over the weekend, please steer clear of the burned areas so that we can focus our after-burn land stewardship in these areas.

Join us in caring for the land at Bluestem, every Friday at our volunteer workdays or at our upcoming Family Planting Day on April 24th.

Bluestem sending a note of caution to all walkers and bird watchers today with a tornado watch in effect throughout central NC. A tornado watch is another word for unpredictable — possible high winds with branches scattered on trails, thunder and lightning, even some hail — all high risk factors under Bluestem’s big sky and heavily wooded areas. Tune in to your trusted weather reports (we like ) and plan to return on a sunnier day.

Like tomorrow!

Friends and families – we hope you are ready (or actively preparing) for the incoming ice storm this weekend! Bluestem’s trails are still open for walking and visiting and we are watching the forecast carefully. We ask you to use caution in traveling the roads — follow for Ethan’s excellent and comprehensive reporting.

Photos here are from last weekend so if you are visiting, you may still find a dusting of snow — please watch for ice on the pathways, fallen branches or twigs, and be ready for excessive cold. Bluestem’s only shelter is under the open air barn.

Staff will not be on the property over the next several days. For immediate burial, please contact your local funeral home or .modernfuneralhome. For emergencies, call 911.

We’ll keep everyone updated throughout the week with posts here and on Facebook. Stay safe and warm, and don’t forget to check in on your neighbors!

It's International Vulture Awareness Day and we're celebrating the turkey and black vultures that reside here at Bluestem. Swipe through for some details and download the full fact sheet from the Everyday Conservation tab on Bluestem's website. We hope you’ll come out to see these amazing avians and check out our interpretive signage in the barn for yourself.

Big thanks for these vulture interpretation materials, part of Everyday Conservation at Bluestem, and developed by lester and , with grant support from educators of north carolina.

Hello Bluestem friends, families, and volunteers! We're excited to see all your work, your loved one's choice, and your hiking selves celebrated in Chapel Hill Magazine's Sept-Oct issue. It just landed in our mailbox today, and we couldn't agree more with friend Kathleen Davidson's words: "know(ing) my last act will be to give back to the Earth is such a comfort to me - I would say comfort and joy." Find your own copy at area coffee shops, restaurants, some local grocery stores, and Chambers of Commerce. Better yet, come out to walk Bluestem's trails and listen to its sounds yourself! Open every day dawn to dusk. Stop by the barn for a map or a self guided tour, and find us working in the fields, supporting families in the cabin, or enjoying the sway of the ironweed by the pond.

Bluestem is a proud conservation cemetery, pleased to partner with two longstanding local land trusts Eno River Association and Triangle Land Conservancy. Both organizations co-hold the conservation easement over Bluestem’s 87 acres. This legal document ensures that Bluestem remains a natural space for wildlife and for humans into perpetuity — an apt phrase for a place of perpetual rest and restoration. ☀️

With the great energy and support from the many volunteers who care for this land, for the wildlife, and for the families who choose Bluestem for natural burial, Bluestem continues to be a special place for healing and rest for all 🦋

Come mark the summer solstice at Bluestem this Friday, June 20! Self-guided walking meditations will be available all day in the barn. Sit for a while with the birdsong. Bring a friend for a stroll. Or come around sunset to watch the skies turn deepening shades of pink, purple and blue on the longest day of the year. ☀️

Bluestem is open from dawn to dusk. Park at the front and walk in through the gate, and stop by the barn if you’d like to take a printed map and meditation with you.

Regenerating at Bluestem — sections of grasslands returning to green after our controlled burn last month, Larkspur blooming on the edge of a field, gravesites settling into the earth. In the woods, Christmas ferns are lush after recent rains and straddle the inner loop trail. A new footpath is under construction. Staff and volunteers resting over the long weekend.

Come regenerate yourself at Bluestem — the pathways and quiet spaces await you. Open dawn to dusk.

Please note that Bluestem is closed today - May 1, for safety. We are conducting our annual prescribed burn and will reopen in time for our Friday Workday tomorrow 🙂

Prescribed fire is an ancient and vital conservation practice that helps to reduce invasives in the fields, nourishes the soils, and serves to regenerate native species in grassland habitats. Every year Bluestem staff select sections of the fields for burning, we call in our burn boss and burn crew volunteers, and prepare ourselves for a big work day. Link in bio to learn more about Prescribed Fire at Bluestem.

Returning in the coming days, you may see ash remnants in the fields, as well as new growth regenerating in these areas. Staff and volunteers will focus after-burn land stewardship on any graves within the burned areas, reseeding with native species and replacing pine straw cover as necessary. Join us in this work! Our Friday Workdays are described online with a sign up sheet for more info.
