Advocates, FoodCorps staff, and community members will be gathering to talk with legislators about the importance of healthy school meals for all! Come out to share your support and passion for all kids having access to healthy school meals!

Vertical gardening is a hit at Lovejoy Elementary School in Des Moines!

Each 4th and 5th grade class has two vertical strands of plants - on two moveable carts/coat racks, one for each grad level. Students collected recyclables to use, decorate, and plant carrots, lemon basil, radishes, and flowers in. The vertical gardens then rotate classrooms every week, where each class takes care of all the plants - they truly become a community garden!

FoodCorps service member Jillian helped to make this possible! It's always nice to give kids the opportunity for kids to try foods in a new way with a fun recipe. We can't wait to hear their reactions to the mango popsicles! 💕 🥭 😋

✨ 🪄 Seeing what magic our service members can do in a classroom is truly incredible. 🪄 ✨

Today Cedar Rapids service member Jillian taught 7 lessons about the Pick a Better Snack vegetable highlights this month - broccoli and cauliflower! She roasted them with seasonings in the air fryer and talked about what family the plants come from. And that both vegetables originated in the Mediterranean.

And for those wondering... Broccoli and Cauliflower are from the Wild Mustard Plant family. 🌱 🥦

🍁SM Clara hosted an Esperanza Rising cooking celebration with ALL the 5th graders in BOTH of her schools
🍁Garden cleanup with families at Lovejoy Elementary
🍁Fun cafeteria engagement around Halloween
🍁Final Garden Clubs in Des Moines before the colder weather
🍁School-wide taste test in Cedar Rapids with the principal and site supervisor
🍁Utilizing pumpkin for all the things! From painting to counting seeds for math lessons

Gourd-a love when the schools we serve are so welcoming and inviting for kiddos! Shoutout to Kenwood Leadership Academy in Cedar Rapids for this adorable welcome scarecrow outside of the school!

Our state staff have finished up site visits for the fall here in Iowa, and have been blown away by the great work so far this school year by FoodCorps service members Jillian in Cedar Rapids, and Clara and Jorge in Des Moines!

We have nothing but gourd intentions in the lessons we teach. Service Member Jillian really carved out some time today to teach the kids all about pumpkins. The kids really had pumpkin to talk about after this lesson!

🍄🎉 It's about time we showcase our final Member Monday for Iowa FoodCorps...on a Wednesday! 🎉🍄 This week, let's meet our third, and final service member serving in Iowa for this 2023-2024 program year - JORGE!

Jorge is serving in Des Moines Public Schools and is a returning service member! He enjoys connecting with people through food because there’s nothing more special than sharing food with another person. So, please feel free to share food with Jorge if you run into him!
🍽 Jorge serves because the future is the children. And so, by spreading honesty, truth, knowledge, and love to the children, we are establishing a foundation filled with hope.
👣 Some great advice that Jorge has received is to: take small steps towards accomplishing your big goals.
🍄It wouldn't be FoodCorps if we didn't label ourselves as food every once in a while. So, if Jorge were a vegetable, he would be a mushroom. Because he says, "Mushrooms go well with everything!!!!"

🥕🎉 It's time for Member Monday! 🎉🥕 This week, let's meet our amazing Iowa service member Jillian!

Jillian is serving in the Cedar Rapids School District and this is her first year as a service member! She just moved back to Iowa, from Michigan this fall. She loves traveling and summer camps, and when she's not at schools, you can find her going on adventures with her friends, playing piano, or attempting to play video games. She's pumped to get back to her Iowan roots, and she can't wait to see what else she can learn and create over the next year serving as a FoodCorps service member!
🗣 She has been waiting to serve in FoodCorps for over 2 years, and is absolutely stoked to finally get to experience it, and to contribute tot eh community that she grew up in!
🍽 Jillian serves she wants to see the food being grown in local communities feed the people who live there. Growing up in Iowa there was so much that she didn't understand about agriculture and food processes, and she wants to be a part of growing that knowledge in the lives of young people today.
🥕If Jillian were a vegetable, she would be a carrot! She says: "love to hunker down in my home/garden for the most part, but when it’s time to pop out, I can add a lot of color and flavor to the meal around me. Also, I’m a ginger so… orange, carrot-top and all that."
