Mike & Alexa's Rural Cat Haven - MARCH A modest cat rural cat sanctuary in Eastern Iowa

See our other project Rescue And Recycle at http://www.facebook.com/rariowa

Our goal is to build a modest sanctuary space in Eastern Iowa where we can give some discarded and mistreated kitties a better life. We currently are renovating a nice old chicken building to provide shelter to a modest number of kitties. When we are done, they will have somewhere close to 1400 square feet to roam around in. We also care for some outside kitties, and try to help cats in general as

much as we can. We are a limited intake operation though, and have no plans to take requests for additional cats to take refuge here. If we add more, we will seek them out or get them through other animal charities that we work with. Please no requests from the general public.

Kitty update: Sarge improved for a while after the vet, but he's been acting very old lately. It's very unclear how much longer he will last, and it's also entirely unclear what is wrong with him. His blood tests all came back good, but he can barely walk anymore and doesn't seem to retain fluids well.

Chewy is much more stable than he was. He and Wolverine are the last two from that family line that still have the seizures. Wolverine has been having them still, but Chewy hasn't. I guess the Gabapentin maybe works for that.

Mila has been really struggling. She is next on the needs-to-see-a-vet list. I don't understand why, but she just can't control her bowels and it's been a big issue. Her coordination is all screwed up and it's unclear why. She has also become the first non-grey/siamese to have the sort of seizure that killed most of the others.

Skittles had a close call with some sort of sinus thing but got better. Whisper is chronically underweight despite a lot of feeding. The rest of the kitties are doing ok I think for now.

Being responsible for lives is stressful. I wish life wasn't so hard. These last couple of years have been a real test of my durability.

Kitty update: Chewy seems more stable for the moment, and Sarge has been to the vet today so we'll see how that plays out. He's very old and he has been struggling with dehydration despite serious efforts to stop it. We have some antibiotics though, so hopefully he can again smell his food and start eating properly. He did eat some when we got home so that's good. His blood work also came back good overall(surprising!).

Mila is still struggling with gastric issues, but she's been better than before we gave everyone the wormer. Whisper is a lot more stable than she was, but she is still skinny for some reason. Wolverine has been sleeping in the litter box again, but otherwise seems very stable(maybe even better than he was doing before he started sleeping there). So that's the bulk of what's going on right now.

We can always use wet food, and if anyone wants to donate to help with the care we can either have it sent to the vet or to us(whatever works best). Thank you so much for the help we've received so far!

We are having some serious kitty health problems at the moment and would really appreciate it if anyone has anything to chip in toward the vet bills. I've not been well myself; so getting this taken care of has not been easy. We only have 3 left from the Siamese/Grey line and all three are not doing well. Mila and Whisper are also struggling. Sarge likely is dying from his diabetes. Wolverine is doing a lot better than he was, but he's still having seizures. Chewy is having seizures too. Mila is walking oddly and Whisper desperately needs to gain weight. Everyone could use a little TLC. That's just way too much vet costs for us all at once right now.

These last two years especially have been nightmarishly hard. I wish I could dial back the time to before all this started. I'm walking around with a mountain of grief on my shoulders that doesn't seem to get better. I really need things to get easier at some point.
