We wanted to share a recent story from one of our incredible Dare to Dream® mentors.
Recently, she and her mentee toured Hawkeye Community College and the Waterloo Career Center, taking some of the first steps toward planning for the future. Together, they explored opportunities, discussed possibilities, and began creating a path for life after graduation.
This mentor has also had a deeper conversation with our case manager this spring about Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI). Before they are matched, all of our volunteers learn about this "holistic, attachment‑based, trauma‑informed model designed to support children and youth who have experienced adversity."*
Through this conversation, she gained a deeper understanding of her mentee's experiences and recognized how painful it can be when biological family members are unable to show up in the ways a young person hopes or expects. Those disappointments can reinforce feelings of hurt and continue the cycle of trauma.
By showing up consistently, however, this mentor is helping to rewrite that story.
With every visit, conversation, and commitment she keeps, she is helping her mentee feel seen, valued, and worthy of care and support. She is demonstrating that dependable relationships exist and that someone believes in her future.
This is what Dare to Dream® is all about. We are building futures, changing outcomes, and showing up when it matters most❤️
