From 1990 until 2014, the biannual journal Short Story published a grab bag of short stories, critical articles, essays, interviews, and book reviews. It represented a unique contribution to the literary world. Well, it’s back—with a new look and vision under the auspices of the North American Review.

For a time, the two publications shared an institutional home at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and after a more than decade-long hiatus, the NAR is reviving its sister journal as an annual to make a home for an eclectic range of short fiction.

In December 2025, NAR opened a new contest to select a Short Story Prize winner, who will be published, along with the other finalists, in Short Story's 2026 publication. Our congratulations to inaugural contest winner Whitney Watson, whose story "In Ypres" was selected by final judge Molly Antopol.

Thank you to visiting author Martín Espada for the poetry reading and for selecting this year's Cedar Valley Youth Poet Laureate at yesterday's commencement event!

Congratulations to all of the 2026 CVYPL finalists, especially to the top three selected by the judge:
1st place: Ren Woods
2nd place: Nevaeh Peterson
3rd place: Haven Marlette

We also thank outgoing 2025 CVYPL Daniel Umemezie for his year of service, and we look forward to cheering him on as the Midwest regional winner competing at Nationals in Omaha next weekend!

We are sad to announce that our longtime cover art editor, Gary Kelley, passed away on Sunday. He was 81. This year marks 40 years of Gary working with the NAR, and his art style gave the magazine a distinct visual identity that is much admired. He was generous, prolific, and talented beyond measure. We are planning a special fall issue to honor his legacy. This is a huge loss to us personally and to the art world at large. We are very grateful to have known him, and will miss him terribly.
