Search and Rescue Call-Out – Cedar Mountain January 31, 2026
On January 31st at approximately 7:30 p.m., Iron County Search and Rescue was dispatched for four young men in two separate vehicles, from the St. George area who became stranded while traveling over Cedar Mountain.
While crossing the mountain, the group encountered multiple downed trees blocking the roadway, and 10"-12" of snow preventing them from moving forward or turning around. With daylight gone, temperatures dropping, and no safe route out, Search and Rescue was requested.
A total of six Search and Rescue responders deployed using snowmobiles, along with a tracked side-by-side, to access the area. Teams were able to locate both vehicles and all four individuals. Everyone was found safe and uninjured.
The group was safely escorted off the mountain and reunited with their parents at the Webster Flat turnoff on Highway 14. Search and Rescue personnel returned to the SAR building at approximately 10:30 p.m., concluding the operation.
Public Safety Reminder
Winter travel in mountain areas can change rapidly. Snow accumulation, fallen timber, and impassable roads can occur without warning — especially after storms or wind events. What may be passable during daylight hours can quickly become dangerous after dark.
Before traveling in winter conditions:
Check road and weather conditions
Carry cold-weather gear, food, water, and emergency supplies
Travel with a charged phone and backup power
Let someone know your route and expected return time
Avoid pushing past known obstacles or barriers
This incident ended safely due to early communication, cooperation, and a timely response — but many similar situations can escalate quickly.
Preparedness and good decision-making save lives.
