Join the Urban Land Institute on November 11th for a workshop that explores resilience across NWA, from individual parks to regional watersheds!

Sometimes it’s all about perspective 📸

From a distance, this native rain garden might look like it’s drying up and winding down for the season. But zoom in on the asters and it’s a whole different story! Asters bloom from late summer into fall, giving native pollinators a vital source of food when little else is flowering.

As colder weather sets in, remember that native plants keep working even after they fade. Left standing, their hollow stems become cozy winter homes where tiny pollinators can tuck in, ride out the cold, and emerge in spring.

So before you reach for the pruners, consider leaving those “dead” stems in place. Your tiny bug friends will thank you!

Does this look like fun to you? Join the IRWP team this Thursday, October 29, from 3 to 5 PM as we retrofit a detention pond in Bethel Heights!

No experience needed! We’ll provide soil knives, walk you through the restoration project, and show you how this work helps improve our watershed. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a first-timer, there’s a place for you!

The detention pond is in a neighborhood off Jefferson Street, on the roundabout between Morgan Haley Lane and Jon Davis Lane.

Last week, IRWP hosted three volunteer events, and our team is so grateful to everyone who showed up. Your hard work made a real difference for water quality in the Illinois River watershed!

On Wednesday, Fayetteville High School AP Environmental Science students joined us at the Ozark Natural Science Center near Lake Fayetteville to tackle woody invasive plants. After learning proper removal techniques, they got to work ripping out Bush Honeysuckle using equipment IRWP purchased through a U.S. Forest Service grant focused on invasive plant removal and native plant revegetation.

On Thursday, the Garver team spent part of their annual work retreat cleaning up Spring Creek in Springdale, hauling out a whopping 32 bags of litter as part of Know the Flow NWA’s fall cleanup series. Now that’s team bonding!

On Friday, Walmart volunteers helped us plant 3,000 native plant plugs in a Rogers detention pond that’s being retrofitted to improve stormwater management for the surrounding neighborhood.

Caring for a watershed this size can feel like a big job, but with volunteers like these on our side, we’re confident we can make a positive, lasting impact on the Illinois River watershed.

Come test your water knowledge at a Water Trivia Night at Ozark B**r Company in Rogers on Saturday, November 7th! Come enjoy free food and drinks, win raffle prizes, and learn about septic system tips, assistance, and grants available for the Illinois, Beaver, and Buffalo watersheds.

Trivia begins at 5:30 PM and there will be free food and two drink tickets provided per person while supplies last. Partners from the Beaver Watershed Alliance, H2Ozarks Cleaner Water Together, Beaver Water District, the AR Water YP Network, and others will be in attendance.

Trivia prizes will be awarded to the winners thanks to Garver and Crossland Construction Company, Inc., along with other door prizes!

At first glance, it's just a pile of bedrock, but these rocks tell a bigger story!

They were dug up on a homeowner's property in Lincoln, Arkansas, to make room for a new septic system. When the homeowner contacted IRWP's Septic Tank Remediation Program (STRP) due to their failing septic system, our team provided the financial and technical support needed to see the project through, even when the ground posed its own challenges.

110 projects have been completed under STRP since 2021, and we are continuing this important work for the Illinois River watershed. Help us take back the forest! Join IRWP at Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park on Wednesday, October 28th, to remove invasive plants. We'll be targeting bush honeysuckle, a woody invasive that crowds out native plants in understories across the region.

This event is in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). Under the Illinois River Watershed Invasive Species Removal & Native Re-Establishment USFS grant, IRWP was able to purchase equipment like the one featured in the first photo to support the removal of invasive plants in the watershed. We use it at volunteer events like this one, and landowners in the watershed can also borrow it for their own property! Email [email protected] to learn more.

Read a new Stewardship Story about "Protecting Water Quality for the Next Generation." Written by Jeri Fleming, it follows how a single IRWP site visit grew into a lasting win for water quality: a conservation easement.

Jeri has been busy providing free site visits and conservation planning for Oklahoma landowners, including Stacy Dunkin, whose property sits near Dancing Rabbit Ridge overlooking the Illinois River. Funded by the Oklahoma Conservation Commission (OCC) and the Grand River Dam Authority, the easement protects approximately 38 acres for the next 50 years, ensuring that the Dunkins’ grandchildren will have the opportunity to grow up enjoying the native landscape and spending summers swimming in the Illinois River.

Stacy Dunkin said it best,
"For landowners within the watershed, the connection to the river comes with a deeper responsibility. We have an opportunity to protect the river and the surrounding landscape through thoughtful conservation practices and long-term tools such as conservation easements. These efforts can safeguard the water, forests, wildlife habitat, scenic beauty, and recreational character of this place, not only for ourselves and our descendants, but for generations beyond them.”
