CONGRATULATIONS on 40 years Jeff & Karen! You are truly the most caring, supportive, and energetic cheerleaders the Illinois Valley could hope for! Thank you for all that you do!❤️❤️

Forty years ago, Jeff and Karen Stiles came home.  On May 22, 1986, the couple, then in their mid-20s, bought the Oregon Caves Chevron station at the corner of Caves and Redwood highways. They’d both grown up in Southern Oregon and had most recently been working for Chevron in the[Read More...]

It looks like Caltrans has set a date to begin work on 199. Hopefully everyone was already aware of this happening over the summer.

(REMINDER) DEL NORTE 199/197 DELAYS BEGINNING MONDAY, FULL CLOSURES LATER THIS SUMMER: Travelers on U.S. 199 and Route 197 northeast of Crescent City should plan for delays beginning as soon as Monday, May 11.

The initial delays next week are expected along U.S. 199 near postmiles 20.2 and 23.2, with up to 10-minute holds at each location.

Delay times and work locations will also be listed in advance in the weekly Road Information Bulletin at tinyurl.com/d1roads, which is typically refreshed on Thursday afternoons.

Full closures are not expected to begin until late July or early August.

When full closures begin, they are expected to be scheduled Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with occasional pauses possible from week to week.

Full closures will be limited to specific spot locations shown on the project graphic, not the entire project corridor all at once.

Later this summer, for the most precise advance notice of which postmiles will be impacted by full closures each week, please check the weekly Road Information Bulletin at tinyurl.com/d1roads and continue following this page.

Once they begin, full closures will be necessary for the safety of workers and travelers during operations such as rock blasting and slope stabilization, and the closures will reduce the project timeline by approximately four years.

Night and weekend work will be minimal, and is only expected for signal operations and maintenance, as daylight is needed for safety due to the nature of the main construction work.

The 197/199 Safe STAA Access Highway Improvement Project will upgrade a few tight and narrow spots on Route 197 and U.S. 199 so industry-standard sized trucks can use the corridor, improving goods movement efficiency without causing a major jump in truck traffic or higher speed limits. Improvements like wider lanes, shoulders, curves, and better sight distance are intended to help all travelers. The targeted improvements, amending only 1.7 miles of roadway, also include bridge work, drainage improvements, pavement upgrades, guardrail installation, and slope stabilization.

You can read more about the project at tinyurl.com/dnstaa.

This past week we had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. with the National Park Conservation Association to advocate on Capitol Hill for the historic Oregon Caves Chateau. It is deeply important to the Illinois Valley community as well as public lands.

We met with Oregon legislators and their staff to urge support for renewing funding through the America the Beautiful Act, specifically the Legacy Restoration Fund. This funding is critical because it is the only viable path to reopening the Oregon Caves Chateau as a lodging facility. As one of just four historic lodges in Oregon, the Chateau is not only a cultural treasure, but also a key driver for the local economy.
This isn’t just about one building, it’s about investing in the places we already have. This funding helps preserve and protect the incredible, unique assets within our public lands rather than diverting resources to new construction. It’s a direct investment in local communities, small businesses, sustainable tourism, and the long-term stewardship of these irreplaceable spaces. It ensures these resources will endure for generations to come.

Now we need your help- it’s your time to shine!

📞 Please take a few minutes to call our elected officials and tell them to support renewal of the Legacy Restoration Fund through the America the Beautiful Act. You can reach the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to Senators Merkley & Wyden and Representative Bentz.

Our voices matter. When legislators hear directly from us, their constituents, it shows that this funding has real, local support and that we care about protecting what makes our region so special.

If you’d like a sample script or talking points for making calls, please reach out to us at [email protected] or 541-592-3326.

Let’s work together to protect our public lands and bring the Oregon Caves Chateau back to life.

We’d like to take a moment to celebrate two incredible members of the community—Roberta and David!

Their willingness to go above and beyond to repair the north side billboard is truly appreciated, and we are so grateful for their time, effort, and generosity.

This is exactly why we love living here—neighbors showing up for one another and taking pride in the community. 💛

Stay tuned for updates on the south side replacement!
