Troop 15 visits Scottsdale Fire Station 613. Thank you to Captain Burns and the hard working men and women of C Shift for hosting our Troop. We got to see all the cool trucks, learned a lot about the fire service, and learned how we shared the common values of helping others first before ourselves.

Camp Pierpan - Troop 15's Summer Adventure!

Camp Pierpan is when Troop 15 runs their own Summer adventure, named for our Troop founder Herb Pierpan. This year Troop 15 camped on Santa Cruz Island, which is part of the Channel Islands off the coast of California.

The Troop explored sea caves in kayaks where a sea lion swam with us and we visited some seals lounging in the back of a cave. We went on several hikes and got to see some breathtaking views. We snorkeled among the kelp forests and saw some fishes and a big sea turtle.

We also learned about pace counts and constructed pace count beads and crafted leather neckerchief slides branded with the Camp Pierpan logo.

We needed to adhere to the Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace Principles. We needed to pack all trash out including any food scraps. Fox boxes were everywhere to keep food and smellables locked up. Island foxes were very bold. Our camp fox left us presents on our table every morning (you can use your imagination). Crows and Island Scrub Jays were persistent as well.

Troop 15's May Campout - Bushcraft

What makes bushcraft different than wilderness survival? Wilderness survival is about using what you have and what you can find to stay alive until search and rescue comes. Bushcraft is going into the woods with a plan, your skills, and tools to thrive in the wilderness. This is a favorite of our Troop. Even the adults got to practice their skills as well.

Today Troop 15 officially welcomes Josh who joins us from Pack 335. Josh has already started attending Troop meetings and joined us on our canoeing trip last week. He's very excited to join the Troop, and we are equally excited to have him!

When a Cub Scout "graduates" from the Cub Scout program and joins a Troop, the traditional ceremony is for the Scout to cross over a symbolic bridge, where his brothers or sisters in the Troop will welcome the Scout, remove the Cub Scout regalia from the uniform, and bestow the Troop regalia on the uniform.

Troop 15's March outing - canoe camping at Bartlett Lake. The Troop is taking 2 crews to Northern Tier High Adventure base, where they will be doing a 7-day backcountry canoeing trek. This was a shakedown outing to expose each other of strengths, areas to improve upon, learning to effectively communicate with each other, and to find spots of conflict so they can work through it now.

It was also an opportunity for the adult crew advisors to get to know the crew and crew leader, and learn how best to coach the Scouts to get the best out of them without overstepping their bounds. The adventure is for the youth. They must deal with issues and find solutions themselves. The victory must be theirs.

Troop 15 helping out Pack 316 with their leadership Pack activity that was put on by their Webelos den. It was a great event that embodied how founder Lord Baden Powell described Scouting: a game with a purpose.

This past weekend, Troop 15's Patrol Leader Council (the youth executive leadership) did a Scout camp themed escape room featuring the Mogollon Monster. Besides fun, it helps with teamwork, communication, and team building. Afterwards they had their monthly planning meeting over tasty milkshakes.

Last week, Troop 15 Assistant Scoutmaster Gil Lau was awarded with the "Black Neckerchief". The Council Key 3 Leadership Award is rarely given and volunteers are selected by the Council executive leadership for their work in Council. He was one of 3 recipients this year.

In addition, he was awarded the Commissioner Award of Excellence for his other job in Scouting as a Commissioner for the Cave Creek area. Being a Scouting volunteer is only an hour a week, right?
