PRESERVING FAMILIES HOUSE

The needs of physically and developmentally disabled adults are different than most individuals in need of residential placement due to their multiple challenges stemming from the combination of their physical and developmental delays. Additionally, some of our Scully Learning Center members have siblings with similar disabilities who have never been separated. These sibships present with even greater challenges as there are no guaranteed adult residential placements for siblings with multiple special needs in the same residence.

For most of our members and developmentally disabled adults across the nation, this will be their first out of home placement. This change is likely to result in significant trauma, posing additional placement challenges. In our current community, there are very few, if any residential settings available to meet the above needs of the physically and developmentally delayed adults. Stated directly, there are no appropriate housing options for our Scully members, which is a common problem across our nation.

Preserved Families House will be the first of its kind and will provide a model enabling a smooth and comfortable transition out of the forever family home for physically and developmentally disabled adults and their siblings.

This project will bring together families and communities, build collaborations and identify resources that could help several other disabled adults transition into supportive housing when their family is no longer able to provide for the residential needs.

SCULLY LEARNING CENTER ORIGINS & ASPIRATIONS:

Since 2010 Scully Learning Center has provided enrichment activities to developmentally disabled adults in Cave Creek, Carefree, North Scottsdale and beyond enabling them to explore the world around them and live meaningful lives with a renewed sense of purpose while becoming part of a close knit family. Scully Learning Center works with adults who have a variety of developmental disabilities including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome and Intellectual delays. We welcome members for life and have several participants who have been with us since our founding more than 12-years ago. We have truly become a family unit.

Through our time together, new unmet needs have been discovered, altering Scully Learning Center Foundation's purpose and aspirations. Specifically, our members, who have never lived outside the family home reside with aging parents/guardians who will one day be unable to provide care and housing. Scully Learning Center Foundation is therefore, launching a three-year, $5 million capital campaign designed to raise funds to establish a distinctive residential center, known as Preserving Families House for adults with developmental and physical disabilities transitioning from lifelong familial placement to a nurturing residential setting that supports a familiar and comfortable quality of life.
