Greene County Honors Outstanding Seniors During Older Americans Month 2026
Carol Pfister of Athens is Named Senior Citizen of the Year.
Greene County is indeed fortunate to have numerous older residents who contribute their talents and energies on behalf of their fellow citizens. For 2026, Carol Pfister of Athens has been named Senior Citizen of the Year, and Kathleen Callan of East Durham will receive the Outstanding Contribution by a Senior Citizen Award.
Carol Pfister of Athens has been a resident of Greene County for approximately 30 years and during that time, she has been a strong, active presence in her community. For over two decades she has served the Athens Cultural Center Board as Treasurer and Bookkeeper by demonstrating steadfast commitment and financial acumen, and serves in current roles on the Executive, Building, and Finance Committees, along with chairing the Athens Victorian Stroll annually. Carol has served as President and Treasurer of the D. R. Evarts Library; and under her leadership transformed the library’s lower level from a dirt floor to a functional space. She serves Community Action of Greene County under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, sharing her knowledge as a retired auditor and manager for the Internal Revenue Service. She is the founder of the Village of Athens Flower Program, which helps to beautify the village streets and together with her husband, Chris, she brings a smiling face to homebound seniors by volunteering to deliver meals under the Department of Human Services. Carol believes and exemplifies that volunteering to help others in need makes one feel good about themselves.
On May20, Carol and Kathleen will be recognized at the Greene County Legislature meeting as part of Older Americans Month. Gordon Mosher of Athens and Joyce Andressen of Catskill also will be recognized & honored as nominees for their service and dedication.
Each year, on Older New Yorkers' Day in May, the New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) honors older adults from around the state for their volunteerism. The event celebrates healthy aging and the power of community engagement. The program is also one way that NYSOFA works to overcome stereotypes about aging – by showcasing the many older adults who are healthy, active, and giving back to their communities. Awardees are recognized for their support of charitable causes, their work with local health care and human services organizations, grassroots civic contributions, volunteer work with emergency management corps, local fundraising activities, and so much more. On May 26th, Carol and Kathie will be among the many being recognized by NYS at a special ceremony as part of the 2026 Older New Yorkers Day celebration at The Crown Plaza Hotel-Desmond in Albany, which includes a luncheon, remarks from state officials, and special recognition of awardees.
All Greene County nominees will be guests of honor at Greene County Senior Citizen Day on September 4th at the Historic Catskill Point where we will celebrate all seniors across the county, as well as the Greene County Office for the Aging’s 50th Anniversary.
