Through our creative approach, students achieve the lifetime achievement of publishing a book. Storytelling is paramount to our success as a nation, it is the tie that consistently binds us from generation to generation. Since the beginning of our collective history there has been an emphasis placed on both oral and written traditions. What is said, who said it, and how they said it, is cemented i
n our cultural consciousness and whether true or not, becomes fact as we know it. Historically, social contentions have risen because storytelling has been reserved for a select group; often a class of people who have the power and resources to mass produce and distribute a message. This has been and remains problematic because the lack of access has silenced voices that hold an invaluable perspective withheld from mainstream dialogue. Generation Write Now is a youth movement organized to empower this, and subsequent generations, to reshape society’s unilateral model of storytelling. Generation Write Now is a program of Lift Bridge Publishing, an independent publishing house launched in 2014. Lift Bridge offers marketing consultations, workshops and other helpful resources to assist authors in the publishing process. In a publishing workshop hosted for students an important question was raised, “I have a child who loves writing, if they want to publish a book, when would they be able to do that?” Lift Bridge Publishing’s founder and self-published author, Ashley Graham responded “right now.”
Ashley created Generation Write Now as an answer to the need for resources for emerging student writers. Self publishing several times herself, penning two poetry books and a children’s book entitled Laugh Oh My Soul, Ashley understands the difficulty in navigating the publishing world. She successfully created Lift Bridge to streamline that process for adults and hopes Generation Write Now will achieve the same results for young people. In the Generation Write Now program, each student will learn:
• The writing process
• The illustration process
• The importance of copyright and protecting intellectual property
• Book sizing and binding
• Establishing book prices and sale goals
• Book Sales and profits
• The book selling process
Each student will receive a workbook, a Generation Write Now T-shirt, and a printed copy of their work at the close of the program. The workshop will provide one-on-one feedback and creative writing sessions amid the outlined curriculum. Author and Nobel Prize recipient, Toni Morrison boldly asserts, “If there's a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it.”Generation Write Now is a youth empowerment program that supports this idea. We seek to inspire young people to capture the world, as they see it, through self-publishing.
