Foster the Family Baltimore aims to provide immediate, emergency, and practical supplies to foster and kinship families, while also offering ongoing, holistic support and care.

At 5:30 p.m. yesterday, we received a follow-up call from a brand-new foster mom who was on her way to the hospital to welcome a baby boy who was just a few days old. ❤️

With no prior parenting experience, she was feeling all the emotions and wondering what else she might need for him as she prepared to bring him home.

As we talked, I shared some of the additional items we could include in the care package being packed for him. I also reassured her that we could help search for other essentials, like a playmat or baby bathtub.

But one of the most encouraging parts of our conversation was hearing that she had already attended the City Support Group and been welcomed into their private group chat. She and her husband were grateful to already have a community of parents who understand what they’re experiencing and who have walked this road before them.

This is exactly what we love to see! 💛

A community is built one connection at a time, and then it becomes a source of encouragement, understanding, and support for families just beginning their foster care journeys.

No one should have to navigate foster care alone. What a beautiful reminder of what can happen when families are welcomed in, connected, and supported from the very beginning.

Thank you, City Support Group, for welcoming new families before their journey even began. You are helping build the kind of community that makes all the difference! ❤️

🎄🔔 Jingle bells, jingle bells… we’re looking for a few holiday elves! 🎁✨

We’re on a mission to make the holidays a little brighter for the children and families served by Foster the Family, and we need YOUR help!

For many foster and adoptive families, the holidays can bring a mix of emotions. Celebrations apart from loved ones, broken traditions, and feelings of melancholy can make this season especially challenging.

BUT… we believe a little Winter Wonderland magic can turn melancholy into merriment! ❄️❤️

That’s why we’re hosting our Winter Wonderland Family Fest—a special celebration designed to bring joy, create new memories, and remind families that they are loved and supported.

You may have heard the saying, “We all put our pants on one leg at a time.”

And while that’s true, it doesn’t really have anything to do with foster care… or does it? 😊

Because we ALL have something we can do to support children in foster care during such a vulnerable time in their lives.

Today, we want to give a huge shout-out to Katy Napier, a local LuLaRoe consultant, who donated nearly 100 pairs of leggings to help keep the young kiddos we support covered! ❤️

Thank you, Katy, for YOUR “something.”

Maybe our somethings look different.

Maybe your something looks like writing a note of encouragement to a foster mom who is welcoming a child into her home.

Maybe your something looks like spending part of your Saturday packing a care package and showing up on the doorstep of a home where a child arrived the night before to live with people they’ve never met.

Maybe your something is sharing with your department at work about the needs of children in foster care and organizing a toy drive before the holiday season to bring a little extra joy.

There are MANY somethings to go around.

And every single one matters.

But back to you, Katy…

Oftentimes, when we share about the various Foster the Family programs, we say that care packages are hopefully our “in” with families. Our team wants to show up during that critical time when a child is first placed with a foster family—but we certainly don’t want it to end there.

Community for foster, kinship, and adoptive families is a big part of the mission. We want families to know they don’t have to walk this journey alone, and we hope they can find the support they need to keep going long after that initial “yes” to a child entering foster care.

We’re so glad Cherish looks forward to attending a monthly support group! ❤️

Dinner and childcare are provided at groups in Baltimore City & County, Carroll, Harford, and Montgomery Counties. Cecil and Washington Counties also have monthly foster mom support groups!

We share these numbers not to keep score, but to show the impact.

Behind every number is a volunteer who showed up to make something meaningful happen.

1 child care volunteer showing up to support group so a parent can get their cup filled.

1 delivery volunteer bringing something to a doorstep so a child has a pair of shoes they didn’t have before.

1 donor providing tickets to an event so a foster family can create a core memory they otherwise may not have been able to provide.

1 volunteer making a lasagna so kids can have a warm meal while their parents get a much-needed break.

These “1” numbers are worth talking about, too. Because every single one represents someone choosing to show up—and making a difference for a child or foster family.

So, thank you to everyone who showed up in September! Your “1” matters more than you know. ❤️

When Danyell reached out from Shady Grove Fertility, she shared that as an adoptive mom and former foster mom, giving back to children and families in foster care is especially near and dear to her heart. She wanted their Community Service Committee to find a meaningful way to support local foster families—and they truly went above and beyond. ❤️

We knew their office was hosting a donation drive, but we were absolutely blown away when Danyell and Jessica arrived at our office with a car packed full of children’s clothing, toiletries, and other much-needed supplies.

Jessica shared how eye-opening the experience was for her own children, who helped sponsor a care package for boys their age. What a beautiful opportunity to teach kids the power of generosity and remind them that small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

We’re so grateful to the entire team at Shady Grove Fertility for seeing a need and choosing to meet it in such a tangible way. 💙

An easy—but oh-so-impactful—way to support foster families isn’t just during that first week of chaos when a child is welcomed into their home. It’s also during those other heightened seasons of crisis: an intense court date, a family emergency, or, sadly, a hospitalization.

One simple way to show up? Bring them a meal! ❤️

And you don’t even have to show up yourself. You can donate a meal to our stockroom, and we’ll have it ready to go when a foster family’s need arises.

We’ve had small groups host meal-making events, parents cook meals with their kids and donate them to Foster the Family, and a few faithful volunteers who make a couple of meals each month as a way to use their gifts to bless others.

Don’t cook? Or maybe you don’t cook well (ahem…raises hand 🙋‍♀️)? That’s okay, too! Restaurant gift cards are always happily accepted and can be especially helpful for families navigating allergies or specific dietary restrictions.

Meet Karen - one of our fabulous Delivery Volunteers! 🥰

When we asked why she wanted to become involved with Foster the Family, here's what she said:

“My first encounter with FTF was when we received a 3-month-old baby who came to us with clothes he had almost grown out of. I started searching for help from sites that catered to babies, toddlers, etc. Another place I reached out to for help suggested I call Foster the Family.

I think I needed onesies, socks, and bibs to add to what I had already purchased. I was so impressed with how quickly FTF responded to my call and, more importantly, by the fact that they WANTED to help. We received food, clothes, toys, and an activity center/exersaucer for the baby. I had asked about one, and FTF found one for me. We received more than I could list. All I could do was smile and be thankful!

I knew then that I wanted to be a part of delivering a smile! That smile works both ways. I feel so privileged to shop and deliver. Sometimes I get downright giddy, especially when it’s for newborns.”

Thank you Karen, for being such a reliable person, showing up to the doorstep, just like another volunteer showed up to yours. 🏠
