25 years ago our country was forever changed. 2,977 innocent lives were lost and the lives of hundreds of thousands of families were permanently altered. 1,609 individuals lost a spouse and 3,000 children lost a parent. 100 pregnant women lost the father of their child.
Approximately 100,000 First Responders stepped into the danger of the unknown without hesitation to help with rescue and recovery efforts. 800 professional and civilian boat operators helped with the largest boat evacuation in world history, evacuating 500,000+ people from Manhattan in just one day. Air Force pilots immediately scrambled above DC without live weapons with the knowledge they might not return on a one-way mission to collide with other potential hijacked aircraft.
35,000 Reservists and Military were immediately called up to secure the attack sites, high value targets the coast and air.
Over 145,000 First Responders and Survivors of all attack sites have enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program. 9,677 have died as a result of cancers acquired to toxic chemical exposure during response, recovery and clean-up efforts. 20% struggle with PTSD. 20% have early-onset cognitive decline.
Of the roughly 410,000 to 480,000 total people heavily exposed to the toxic dust cloud in lower Manhattan, approximately 67,000 individuals have passed away from all causes since 2001.
The impact of 9/11 remains difficult to comprehend or quantify despite these numbers. We remember and honor the lives of those who died in the attacks and those who died as a result in their efforts to help others. We are at our core a country of helpers, of love, compassion and support. Be kind to one another, help your fellow man and woman. Life is short and can be taken away in an instant. Honor and carry the legacy of those who are no longer here with you today and every day.
