Families often hear terms like *respite*, *day care*, *adult day programs*, and *personal assistance* used interchangeably—even though they are very different services.
Understanding the difference can make a huge impact on your ability to advocate effectively during IPP meetings and ensure your loved one receives the supports they actually need.
For example:
• Respite is designed to give caregivers a break.
• Day care helps children whose support needs exceed what traditional child care can provide.
• Adult day programs focus on skill-building, community participation, and structured daytime activities.
• Personal assistance helps with daily living tasks like dressing, bathing, feeding, and other supports that may not be covered by IHSS.
We've created this quick-reference guide to help families understand how these services work, who may qualify, and who can provide them.
One important reminder: While the information in this guide reflects California's overall framework, each of the 21 Regional Centers has some discretion in how services are interpreted, funded, and implemented. Always verify information directly with your Service Coordinator and refer to your loved one's Individual Program Plan (IPP).
Which of these services has been the most confusing for your family to navigate?
