The Rhythm Cadets have spun off from ACDSAL as our own 501(c)(3) organization, "Rhythmic Pathways," and we are excited that The California Arts Council has announced two grant awards to Rhythmic Pathways as part of its JumpstArts and Reentry Through the Arts programs in its first round of funding for 2022.

We are so honored and grateful to receive this funding from the California Arts Council which allows us to continue the work we began in 2020/2021 teaching music and making a positive impact in the lives of young people in the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center in San Leandro, CA.

Rhythmic Pathways was featured as part of a larger announcement from the California Arts Council, with grant awards for its Cycle A programming totaling more than $31 million across more than 1,100 grants supporting nonprofit organizations and units of government throughout the state. The dollar amount already marks the largest annual investment in the California Arts Council’s 46-year history.

The Rhythm Cadets Drumline will continue as a program of Rhythmic Pathways alongside our Juvenile Justice Programs and Entertainment Group.

AC Dsal Summer Camp Session 1. RCD staff shared drumming with 47 day campers, most of whom never played drums before. It was a great way to get new kids from the community introduced to drumming and we get to see them twice a week for the next three weeks. Session 2 begins July 19. Register at acdsal.org. (we never got to practice in a shade tent back in the day)!

When Chris told me about this project for Sac, I knew it would be difficult to pull off, but he is amazingly talented and creative and knows how to get the best out of his students. So glad he is part of the RCD family and thankful for all he brings to our programs!

On Saturday, May 1, the Rhythm Cadets are hosting a no contact document shredding event to raise money for programs supporting our justice system involved students and our local community students. Our goal is to raise $10k for sticks/pads, drums, transit passes, and other learning materials. We thank you for your support and encouragement as we come out of the pandemic's restricted tiers. If you are not in the bay area or can't make it to the shred event, you can make a donation through Facebook using the Donate button on our page.

Building on the success of the Rhythm Cadets Drumline, we expanded our program offerings with a new branch called RC Pathways which was created to teach music as a second language and give elective course credit and a form of therapeutic healing to the justice system involved youth in juvenile detention centers.
Chris and I moved gear to the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center on January 13, met the students on January 19, and gave the first day of formal instruction on January 20. For the past two months, we have been working with students virtually and look forward to going back onsite for in person classes. Our second term begins on April 2 and we have the opportunity to expand our JJC offerings to more units once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted by the state and county.

Our Story

Competitive drumlines go far beyond what was portrayed by Hollywood in the Drumline movies. It is a whole different take on the concept of teamwork. In competition, drumlines are evaluated on how well the individual musicians play together as one unit…if there is a line of 10 snare drummers, they must move, play, and sound as one. Research has shown that marching drummers can possess the same level of physical conditioning as world class athletes in addition to taking on the demands of memorizing music and the rush of performing before an audience.

Back in the ‘70s and ‘80s, there were several small marching units in each major city in the east bay. Oakland had the Imperials Drum and Bell Corps, San Leandro had the Royal Family Marching Units (Red Knights Drum and Bell Corps, Royalaires Drum and Bugle Corps, and Baton Units), San Lorenzo had the Blue Angels Drum and Bell Corps/Baton Units), Union City had Los Companeros Drum and Bell Corps/Baton Unit, Milpitas had the South Bay Barons Drum and Bell Corps, and San Jose had the Rebel Cadets Drum and Bell Corps. All of those corps competed as members of the California Drum and Drill Association and served as training grounds and feeders for the larger National Champion Drum and Bugle Corps in the bay area, namely the 6 time world champion Santa Clara Vanguard and 18 time world champion Concord Blue Devils (www.scvanguard.org www.bluedevils.org ). Although the small corps folded many years ago, The Vanguard and Blue Devils still exist today as multi-million dollar non-profit organizations that are furthering the marching music art form and taking it to new heights. They draw their membership from the local high schools but, in the last decades, have gotten so big that they draw as much as 25% of their members from around the nation and around the globe. Budget cuts in many school districts impact music programs especially hard and are often the first programs to get reduced. While only highly funded / supported schools are able to have music programs, many students in “not so well funded” schools are left with desire but no opportunity to participate in such an activity.

The Rhythm Cadets are starting with just drums and percussion but hope to grow to include other instruments as well. As we rekindle awareness and appreciation of the drum corps activity in the east bay public, we will strive to provide young people with positive life experiences that can impact them forever.
