Rounding out our Swine Group is Cooper Sorgel...

My name is Cooper Sorgel. I am going into 7th grade with my homeschool group. I am part of the Palomares Livestock Team. I have raised pigs for 2 years now. In my spare time I build models, (for the fair and for fun), play video games, build legos and fight my twin sister along with my older sister.

Raising pigs is no walk in the park, breeding them is even harder. You have to make sure their water is working and feed them twice a day, if it is a show pig you also have to walk them. But if it is a breeding sow, I could talk forever about everything you have to do, but I will just talk about the main things. You have to weigh them, you also have to weigh show pigs. We also artificially inseminate the sows once they come into heat. When they give birth, you have to make sure the piglets come out smoothly, and help them get milk and get warm. Sometimes they give birth in the middle of the night, so you have to wake up and help. You have to give the piglets shots, and ear notches, and dock their tails (for health reasons and showing), castrate, and wean. You also have to buy feed and based on how they weigh in, changes are made to their feed plan.

My pig's name this year is Kevin Bacon. He loves belly rubs, food, belly rubs, eating my mom’s garden, wrestling, belly rubs, getting brushed, mud and chilling out, and if you like ham I recommend you buy him. He is lovably unruly. My last pig's name was Bacon On The Run but we called him Bacon. He has the same personality as Kevin. Two OUTSTANDING PIGS (and yummy). I am excited to show in my second year in 4-H and improve my showing skills and chill at the fair.
