Workplace injuries still affect millions of workers every year — even as some injury rates decline, the toll on families remains significant. In 2024, U.S. employers reported about 2.5 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses, with many cases involving days away from work.

When these injuries happen, the impact can ripple through families — including children whose education may be affected. That’s where Kids’ Chance of Oregon steps in, helping provide scholarship support and a sense of community to students whose families have been touched by workplace injury or loss. (https://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/2026/2-5-million-workplace-injuries-and-illnesses-in-private-industry-in-2024-down-3-1-percent-from-2023.htm?utm_source=chatgpt.com)

As we wrap up scholarship applications and begin planning our Fall Fundraiser Silent Auction, we’re reminded that every injury has a human story and every student deserves opportunity and support.

Many families don’t realize this…

If a child’s parent has experienced a serious workplace injury or fatality, that child can be registered with Planning for the Future at any age.

And here’s something even more important:
It doesn’t have to be the family who submits the information.

Anyone who has the child’s name, date of birth, and workers’ compensation claim number can submit them through the Kids’ Chance of America Planning for the Future program.

KCOA stays in touch twice a year to keep contact information current. When the student turns 16, their information is sent to the state organization (like Kids’ Chance of Oregon) so scholarship outreach can begin.

You don’t have to wait until senior year.
You don’t have to wait until college applications.
And you don’t have to wait for the family to find us.

If you work in workers’ compensation, insurance, legal, HR, or know a family impacted by workplace injury - please help us connect early.

Planning for the Future Criteria for Kids’ Chance scholarships vary by state. To see how your state handles scholarships, find your Kids’ Chance organization. Know that our scholarships are awarded to those attending any accredited post-secondary or technical education program.

Behind every Kids’ Chance of Oregon scholarship is a student rebuilding their future after a parent’s workplace injury or fatality.

We awarded $105,433 to 9 Oregon students in 2025, and 2026 growth is already underway. To continue expanding our impact, we need volunteers who believe in opportunity after hardship.

There are many ways to get involved:
✔ Join a committee
✔ Volunteer at fundraising events
✔ Host your own small fundraiser
✔ Connect us with potential partners or sponsors
✔ Share your professional expertise
✔ Help spread awareness in your workplace

Every hour, introduction, and shared post makes a difference.
